Phd StudentPolitecnico Di Torino Jan 2007 - Dec 2009Thesis Title: Development of innovative low cost sensors based on optical technologies.The thesis deals with the development of innovative low cost sensors based on optical technologies. Main goal of this research is the realization of a real-time monitoring systemfor the measurement of chemical and physical quantities.In this thesis sensors for low concentrations of toxic gases have been realized by using two different optical strategies.In the first chapters the first solution is described: the sensorsare based on plastic optical fibers, whose surface is modified to make them sensitive to the presence of specific contaminants.The second solution employs the Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) phenomenon.During my PhD course, in addition to the thesis activity, I have actively collaborated to the development of two complex acquisition systems: an acquisition system based on NI PXI in collaboration with Ferrero S.p.A. in Alba and one based on the NI Compact-RIO requested by Pirelli Tyre S.p.A..The first case involved the study, the design and the implementation of a complex acquisition system for acquiring and processing signals in an experimental photovoltaic field. This system is based on National Instruments systems, in particularly a LabView software and a NI PXI.The second case deals with the implementation of a system for the process control during the production of tires. In this case the designed system is based on a Compact-RIO National Instruments and a LabView software created ad hoc. -
