About Alessandro Carcione, Phd

My academic journey began with a focus on nonlinear ultrasonic methods during my Bachelor of Engineering thesis, and I had continued to explore and expand this area through my PhD and postdoctoral research. In addition to my academic pursuits, I was an enthusiastic electronics hobbyist. I had developed a wide variety of electronic circuits and devices, including a high-performance differential amplifier and ADC solution during my research studies and past employment. My skills extended to PCB design, component procurement, and manufacturing. I had also founded several popular open-source electronics projects, such as ExpressLRS and Chorus32.My passion for programming grew alongside my skills in mechanical and electrical systems. I was experienced in several programming languages, including C/C++, Visual Basic, VHDL, MATLAB, Python, HTML, LabVIEW, JavaScript, and SQL. I particularly enjoyed the challenge of developing software for resource-constrained embedded systems. My major contributions to the field of nonlinear ultrasonics included developing specialized measurement hardware for high sensitivity measurements and novel nonlinear methods such as the multi high frequency modulation technique (MHF). I had also created a new time-based demodulation method for the improved visualization of nonlinear characteristics and an air-coupled nonlinear vibro-acoustic measurement system.I had been involved in collaborative projects with industry partners to improve existing non-destructive testing (NDT) technologies. I was working on a new nonlinear time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) measurement technique and investigating improvements to dynamic response spectroscopy (DRS), a specialized NDT method for pipeline corrosion inspection.I was also excited to have been part of a DMTC-backed Industry Capability Development project aimed at bringing Industry 4.0 solutions to Australian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This project aimed to provide SMEs with the tools and knowledge to adopt digital technologies and improve their competitiveness in the global market.

I am a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering at the University of Queensland. My current research area is nonlinear ultrasonic methods for non-destructive evaluation (NDT/NDE). My major contributions are the development of specialised measurement hardware for high sensitivity measurements, development of novel nonlinear methods such as multi high frequency modulation technique (MHF), a new time-based demodulation method for the improved visualisation of the non-linear characteristics and development of an air-coupled nonlinear vibro-acoustic measurement system. I have also been involved in collaborative research activities with industry partners such as Sonomatic to improve existing NDT technologies and I’m currently working on a novel nonlinear TOFD measurement technique. I am also involved with DMTC in Industry Capability Development projects aimed at bringing Industry 4.0 solutions to Australian SMEs.

The aim of the project was to investigate the application of non-linear ultrasonic measurement techniques to detect debond damage in light weight structures. Non-linear ultrasonics is one promising technique to extend the capability of conventional ultrasonic non-destructive testing. As part of my undergraduate thesis I developed a non-linear ultrasonic measurement system. This system was then successfully applied to detect delamination damage in composite beams, the aim of this project was to apply the same principles to detect damage in lightweight titanium composite hybrid materials.
