About Alessandro Scarpato
I'm a data scientist who loves to tackle high complexity systems. As a R&D engineer, I developed damping strategies to overcome thermoacoustic instabilities in gas turbine combustors and increase engine performance and flexibility. I used data from unsteady numerical simulations or experiments to conceptualize, develop and validate models of dynamic systems. I brought several new technologies in gas turbine combustors during my 7 years career.Since February 2020 I am applying my passion for data to the banking and finance business. In my current position I lead the Innovation and Data Analytics team in the Internal Audit function. We develop models and tools based on different techniques (machine learning, natural language processing) to gain a better understanding from complex structured and unstructured data.
Listed skills include Combustion, Thermoacoustics, Gas Turbines, Matlab, and 14 others.

Head Of Innovation And Data Analytics - Internal Audit
CurrentAs Head of Innovation and Data Analytics for the Internal Audit department at a major bank, I lead a small team focused on delivering impactful data pipelines, advanced analytics, and visual dashboards. Our work provides the auditors with valuable insights that drive strategic decision-making. I'm responsible for setting the vision and roadmap for how data and analytics can transform the audit function.
Data Scientist
As a Data Scientist for Group Internal Audit at Julius Bär, I am in charge of creating meaningful insights in business data. In this multi-faceted role I have the opportunity to work with SQL databases, create predictive machine learning models, extracting structured data from text with advanced NLP techniques, and creating Tableau dashboards.
R&D Engineer, Combustor Technology
I joined Ansaldo Energia to work on the very exciting range of annular and can-annular gas turbines that were being developed. - I was Technical Project Lead for an ambitious combustor upgrade project, responsible for coordinating the work of a team of 6 people, define, execute and analyze atmospheric and high pressure tests, and validate new technology introduction all the way up to engine level.- I drove the development of advanced statistical analysis and machine learning tools to… Show more I joined Ansaldo Energia to work on the very exciting range of annular and can-annular gas turbines that were being developed. - I was Technical Project Lead for an ambitious combustor upgrade project, responsible for coordinating the work of a team of 6 people, define, execute and analyze atmospheric and high pressure tests, and validate new technology introduction all the way up to engine level.- I drove the development of advanced statistical analysis and machine learning tools to take full advantage of full-scale test and engine data to predict gas turbine performance and drive innovation for future upgrades.- I was responsible for the full development cycle of damping strategies for combustion dynamics, from the initial concept to engine implementation. I have designed, validated and brought three acoustic damping technologies to can-annular combustors.- I joined several atmospheric and high-pressure full-scale validation test campaigns, as well as engine tuning campaign.- I authored several patents, journal articles and presented technical work at international conferences. Engineer, Mechanical Component
I worked for GE Power after the acquisition of Alstom Power business in 2015. My responsibilities in this role stretched between the analytical and numerical modelling of the thermoacoustic response of annular and can-annular engines, and hands-on measurements of burner flame transfer functions and damper performance in atmospheric labs.I was also coordinating a technology project aimed at developing combustion dynamics mitigations from conceptual phase to full-scale high-pressure tests.
Development Engineer, Combustor Thermoacoustics
I joined the thermoacoustic team to take on some new challenges. - I conceptualized, developed and validated a novel thermoacoustic model for sequential combustors. - I was responsible of the R&D activity aimed at calculating the acoustic response of auto-ignition flames with unsteady CFD.- I developed and tested at atmospheric and high pressure sophisticated countermeasures for sequential combustor dynamics, in excellent agreement with my model predictions.- I developed a new… Show more I joined the thermoacoustic team to take on some new challenges. - I conceptualized, developed and validated a novel thermoacoustic model for sequential combustors. - I was responsible of the R&D activity aimed at calculating the acoustic response of auto-ignition flames with unsteady CFD.- I developed and tested at atmospheric and high pressure sophisticated countermeasures for sequential combustor dynamics, in excellent agreement with my model predictions.- I developed a new active control strategy for premix burners, and successfully demonstrated its application in water channel and atmospheric tests. Development Engineer, Combustor Technology
I was hired in the combustor technology team at Alstom Power when my manager saw me speak at the ASME Turbo Expo international conference. As a research engineer on new combustor technologies, I focused on fuel flexibility and control of combustion dynamics:- I developed a new forced flashback test procedure for gas turbine burners- I investigated unconventional control strategies, such as plasma-assisted combustion, on a full-scale atmospheric test rig.
Combustion Scientist
During my Master thesis I investigated chemical kinetics of premixed air and hydrogen flames, developing a tool that was used in my lab to visualize chemical kinetic reaction paths during combustion.
Aeronautical Engineer
I was in charge of developing and streamlining a new methodology to carry out unsteady aeroelastic studies on an Airbus aircraft (8 months internship).
