About Alessandro Sparacio

I am a Scientist affiliated with the Human Development platform at SICS. My current research focus encompasses studies on cognition, mood, and stress. At A*STAR, I am actively engaged in advancing the field of Mental Health. In this capacity, I orchestrate the design of clinical studies and meticulously craft protocols to ensure scientific integrity while maintaining operational feasibility.Previously, I earned my Ph.D. from Université Grenoble Alpes and Swansea University, where I conducted two meta-analyses to evaluate diverse regulation strategies. Additionally, I led a multi-site project on mindfulness that involved collaboration with 60 researchers and 37 sites, resulting in data collection from 3,627 participants.Prior to my doctoral studies, I contributed to a research team focused on creating a context-aware platform for patients with chronic diseases, which incorporated wearable sensors and other smart technologies. I also worked for a start-up where I helped develop a virtual assistant to nudge people towards new digital habits. My academic background includes a thesis written at Purdue University on the effects of ostracism in immersive virtual environments and a master in social psychology obtained at the University of Milano-Bicocca. Through these experiences, I have honed my analytical and research skills, as well as my ability to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.

At A*STAR, my work is dedicated to advancing the field of mental health through research that focuses on cognition, mood, and sleep. I specialize in designing and implementing clinical studies, ensuring that protocols uphold both scientific integrity and operational feasibility. My primary focus is on developing non-pharmacological, cost-effective interventions to improve mental health for a broad population, driven by a strong commitment to health equity. One of my notable achievements in this area is leading a large multi-site mindfulness study, recently published in Nature Human Behaviour. This study, the largest of its kind, included 2,239 valid observations across 37 sites.I am deeply committed to Open Science and conducting research with the highest level of rigor to contribute meaningfully to the field of mental health.
  • Université Grenoble Alpes
    Psychology Ph.D. Student
Université Grenoble Alpes May 2019 - Mar 2023
    Grenoble, Francia
The focus of my joint Ph.D., which I started in Grenoble, was on shedding light on stress regulation processes. I examined the evidential value of various stress regulation practices (i.e., mindfulness) to explain better when and why these stress regulation practices are beneficial for people’s well-being. I appraised the available evidence of these strategies on stress regulation in two meta-analyses (the first was pre-registered, and the second was a Registered Report). Finally, when I was in Swansea, I led a multi-site project with a collaboration of 37 universities worldwide to determine which single mindfulness exercise was effective in decreasing stress and which was not.

Università Degli Studi Di Milano-Bicocca Oct 2018 - Apr 2019
    Milano, Italia
I collaborated with a team of researchers on the project SIDERA B. In this team, I helped the creation of a platform context-aware, in which smart technologies (e.g.wearable sensors) handled the care path of patients with chronic diseases.
  • Digital Attitude
    Behavioral Designer
    Digital Attitude Apr 2018 - Oct 2018
    Milano, Italia
In Digital Attitude, I worked on developing a virtual assistant, which had the central role of helping the workers of a company reduce technostress and making them learn new "digital" habits. The virtual assistant simplified their own and their colleagues’ work and finally improved their digital mastery.
  • Università Degli Studi Di Milano-Bicocca
    Temporary Research Fellow
Università Degli Studi Di Milano-Bicocca Jan 2018 - Apr 2018
    Milano, Italia
The research I did was centered around the implications of social interactions inside a Virtual Reality (VR). I conducted psychological experiments to deepen the effect of social exclusion experienced by individuals inside a Virtual Reality.
  • Gambling Over
    Researcher In Psychology
    Gambling Over May 2015 - Oct 2017
    Milano, Italia
During the national competition "Mimprendo 2015," I developed, with the support of a team, a bracelet in order to help pathological gamblers to stop gambling. For this project, my team was awarded by "Rotary Club Padova Est" prize for the social impact of the idea. The bracelet was not thought to be a replacement for a traditional care pathway, but it wanted to be an additional tool for the people that wanted to quit gambling.
