About Alex Ackerman

Social media professional, video game enthusiast, and snack aficionado. @alex_frostwolf across social. While it may be hard to explain to my grandparents what I do and why, with the ever-evolving playspace that is social media, it's hard not to geek out on what innovations may come next, and I love it.As a Social Media/Community Manager, I've helped brands like Apex Legends, Warner Bros, Blizzard Entertainment and more learn how to speak their target audience's language and facilitate those conversations across a wide range of social media platforms, challenging brands to listen to what their communities are saying along the way. Taking that information and working in partnership with brands to create meaningful content that is relevant to both their goals and the needs of their communities is really what gets me fired up.

    San Fernando Valley, California, Us
Coming to Respawn a month after the launch of Apex Legends, there was much to be done. During my time here, I've lead and implemented the social strategy at a studio level for Respawn and its IPs, focusing primarily on the Apex Legends franchise and competitive efforts. This has included not only owning the global social channels and content that populates them, start to finish, and strategies that drive them, but also working to ensure the Apex brand is followed globally with various regional partners. Consistently in lockstep with various teams, including brand, narrative, and product, I've worked to ensure the campaigns I lead align with the overall franchise goals, whether that be player acquisition or retention, at all times. The results have lead to award-winning campaigns, setting the standard of a 10% engagement rate, and consistent organic growth in the millions.

  • Activision
    Social Media Strategist - Destiny
    Activision Nov 2018 - Feb 2019
    Santa Monica, California, Us
Eyes up, Guardian! As the Social Media Strategist for Destiny, I was tasked with re-defining the social voice for the Destiny brand. From how we talked to our players in social posts and content to how we talked with them in 1:1 interactions and beyond, it was important to make sure that everything added value and worked toward making a Destiny player's digital experience as valuable as their Ghost. With this in mind, I worked with my team on a global scale to drive social change, simplify the player experience, and create content.
  • Mgm Resorts International
    Social Media Strategist
Mgm Resorts International Jul 2017 - Oct 2018
    Las Vegas, Nevada, Us
When one thinks Las Vegas, "Esports capital of the world" doesn't necessarily come to mind. That's where I come in.In this role, I've worked alongside Allied Esports to create the social strategy for bringing Esports Arena Las Vegas to life before its March 2018 opening. From research on the current and aspirational demographic, to the development of brand voice, digital assets, and even how we interact with the community, I've helped place the building blocks for MGM Resorts to become a premier Esports destination for years to come with Esports Arena Las Vegas inside the Luxor. I've also worked to begin developing a robust influencer program working with streamers like Ninja and Myth to get things rolling.Esports aside, I've also worked on the Luxor, Delano, and Mandalay Bay brands, including developing their 2018 strategies social media strategies, content creation and community management, and live-event coverage.
  • Blizzard Entertainment
    Blizzcon Contest Manager
    Blizzard Entertainment 2014 - 2018
    Irvine, Ca, Us
With over 20k attendees annually and tickets that sell out in minutes, BlizzCon has come to be the ultimate celebration of the Blizzard Community. Championing the talents of the community worldwide is a goal of BlizzCon and done so via four different contests: Talent, Cosplay, Art, and Movie. As Contest Manager I act as point relationships manager and producer for these contests. From writing communication blogs to answering frantic emails from over 150 participants globally, sorting through entries, to wrangling cosplayers last minute to be in a Weird Al video (yes, that really happened) I was THE problem solver for our BlizzCon contests, and it's easily my favorite time of the year. With BlizzCon spanning across multiple departments at Blizzard, I also worked with teams company-wide including Events, Travel, Corporate Alliances and more as well as prepped talent like Wil Wheaton and Thomas Middleditch to host our Contests. After four years and countless focus groups held with contestants post-con, I also laid the groundwork and completely restructured the way Blizzard handles its Talent and Cosplay contests, working to alleviate problem areas from years past and help elevate the contests to the very best they can be.
  • Blizzard Entertainment
    Social Media Manager
    Blizzard Entertainment Oct 2015 - Sep 2017
    Irvine, Ca, Us
Well...I actually was the voice of Blizzard in this role.In this role, I spearhead all of the Blizzard official social media channels, including creating the strategy and brand guide/voice for Blizzard on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. I then put that strategy into play by generating content for, moderating, and growing those pages. In doing so, I was able to revitalize a dead Twitter page, growing it from 200K followers to almost a million (organically) in a year, tripled the engagement rate on Facebook on a monthly basis, and helped cultivate a healthy community for Blizzard as a company on social rather than players just relying on going to individual franchises. I sustained this healthy ecosystem with a mixture of short-term campaigns, live event coverage, contests, and continuous community moderation and engagement. While community management was my focus, I also had my hand in the social media marking side of things for several months, including writing ad copy, making sure our posts are doing well and then reporting on how we did.
  • Blizzard Entertainment
    Pr Writer
    Blizzard Entertainment Apr 2013 - Jan 2016
    Irvine, Ca, Us
I AM THE VOICE OF BLIZZARDDDD, mwahahahaaaaa!!!Kidding. Well, sort of.In this position, I carefully crafted press releases for major announcements, blogs of all shapes and sizes, and a grab bag of other pieces centered around our 6 different franchises. It was imperative that I become intimately familiar with the distinct 6 different brand voices, allowing myself to switch back and forth with ease. I also dabbled in speech writing, trying my hand at outlining the BlizzCon opening ceremony, and was just a phone call away for any team who needed a "yeah, that looks just fine" grammatically or tonally for any written bit of work.
  • Tracylocke
    Digital Copywriter
    Tracylocke May 2011 - Apr 2013
    Irving, Texas, Us
What person in their right mind would want to put themselves through never-ending 14 hour days, sleepless nights, and countless “but you expect this tomorrow?!”projects? Me. As a digital writer, I’ve helped Pizza Hut create a dialogue with its fans via social Facebook (and gain 5 million new ones, double the amount as when I started), let my inner geek out with a Halo + Doritos collaboration site, and even helped the Big Dinner Box run for president (you can ask Stephen Colberthow that one turned out.) So maybe I didn’t sleep much, and yeah sure I missed out on a few Saturdays, but damn was it all worth it in the end.
