In many ways, I've been engaged in teaching communication in one way, shape, or form for the last 20 years. During that time, it has become abundantly clear to me that one's success as a communicator lies heavily in our ability to negotiate authority within the complex communities to which we belong. In that vein, my passion, professional goal, and scholarly pursuit are simply to help people understand that communicative authority is a dynamic and constantly shifting phenomenon that is socially and locally situated.But more broadly speaking, I've learned that effective communication facilitates sense-making. Both at the individual and complex systems level, effective communication creates a physical and social environment that brings clarity and stability in the midst of uncertainty. And I would suggest, it is precisely to help individuals and organizations achieve and discover this kind of meaning and significance that continually propels me to teach and talk about communication.
