Alex Balduino started his career in 1996, majoring in Biomedical Science at the Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO, Brazil). In his sophomore year, Alex joined the Clinical Laboratory at Hemorio for a one-year internship program. Soon after that, he started working in the research field. Throughout his Master’s, he designed a unique cell isolation technique meant to study the role of osteoblasts in the bone marrow microenvironment, and their regulatory functions within the hematopoietic stem cells niche. This long-term study led to a Ph.D. in 2006.As a part of his doctoral training, he was granted a one-year scholarship at the National Institute on Aging, (NIH, USA, 2004). After returning to Brazil, in 2005, he was invited to launch and head the Cell Technology Center at the National Institute of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, soon becoming its Basic Science Research Coordinator. Nearly eight years later, he became the Technical-Scientific Director of Excellion Labs, a cell therapy and bioengineering research laboratory of the UnitedHealth Group in Brazil. Currently, he is the Research Director at the same company. In 2007, Alex accepted a full-professor and researcher position at Veiga de Almeida University (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), becoming its Research Director three years later and developing its Major in Biomedical Science program (2013), which he also directed. Currently, he is the Pro-rector for Graduate, Diploma Level and Research Programs at the same university. Alex has published several scientific articles, serves as reviewer for prestigious scientific journals, and act as consultant for leading innovative biotechnology companies.Besides his full-time jobs, Alex invests time on the scientific training of high school students. Partnered with the Positivo Informática Company (Curitiba, Brazil), he worked as a mentor for over thirty schoolteachers and a hundred student’s teams (2007-2017). This opportunity turned into yet another partnership with some brilliant young entrepreneurs, who co-founded Skilos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) – a video production company that initially focused on education. Skilos turned into a successful digital business company, having Alex as its current Executive Director.
