Software Developer
I mostly work on the backend of our two SaaS products, primarily coding in Go and C# and using a PostgreSQL database, a Redis cache, Docker to containerize our various services, and gRPC to communicate between them. Occasionally, I help out on the frontend as well where I've used the framework Vue and its state manager, Vuex/Pinia.Here are a few of my accomplishments at FreightWaves:- Early on, I added a feature to one of our products that allows users to edit files they had uploaded through the UI. I got to "own" this project completely on both the front and back ends which was very satisfying.- I rebuilt a file uploading/validation service we had been using to increase the size of files we are able to process. This involved moving logic found in old Python (using pandas) and C# code into Go; setting up new schema in Postgres and writing a few database functions; introducing gRPC streaming calls between services in our backend; updating our version of Go so we could use generics; writing Docker files; updating github workflow files; working with Elasticsearch queries; and eventually migrating older files to use the new system and retiring old services. More recently, I added websocket endpoints to the backend to improve the UX and remove the next bottleneck limiting upload sizes.- I worked on a feature that allows users to tailor an analysis they run to include organization-specific calculations based on fuel rates. This involved building a new service from scratch; using Go's C-bindings to convert pdf to jpeg; and making calls to GCP's storage service.- Lately, I've been looking into ways we can improve our deployment pipeline, currently a complex web of github workflow files in various repos that trigger each other, build images, update helm charts, and eventually result in things making it to GKE.- I have also hunted down and destroyed many bugs, reviewed PRs, and written Jira tickets.
