Placement for Atkins in the Tunnels and Underground Space (TUS) team, working professionally in a range of roles including technical design and review, technical writing and financial forecasting. This year placement is part of the ICE/Surrey Scholarship Scheme. I became known well to and trusted by the team, and was given responsibility equivalent to and above that of a graduate, where my experience was appropriate. Selected experience: Undisclosed project: (2018) Complex deck design to Eurocode II, plus beam and bearing design. Use of hand calculation, Excel sheets for repeatable calculations, and Tekla TEDDS for element load analysis. Additional roles: technical checks and compiling of calculations, document control for over 3000 incoming files, and maintenance of registers and trackers for structural elements, outgoing documents, technical queries, and calculations. Bid to the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (2018) Bid for major defence infrastructure project. Alongside senior management, worked to prepare bid document, including case studies and CVs, relating experience to the services required by the Client. Heavily involved with graphics and publishing elements. Workload Forecast (2017-18) Solely responsible for in-house projections of staff and unit productivity for the TUS team, for comparison to finance dept projections. Updating/management of large spreadsheets plus continuous communication with PMs. Thames Tideway (Central) (2017) CAT III check of a steel frame supporting a tunnel opening in a shaft wall. Analysis of earth pressures, clay soil mechanics, water profiles in clay, forces in piled shaft wall linings, and steel design to Eurocode 3. Initial Feasibility Study for a Bristol Metro system (2016) Technical writing, using interpretation of geological and geotechnical information, research into historical underground structures, technical information on potential rail systems, and route planning.
