About Alex Da Costa
Degreed programmer with 25 years of experience designing and deploying applications across the tech stack, with an emphasis on Linux-based systems and responsive front-end designs.Back End Programmer | DevOpsalexandre.dias.dacosta@gmail.comWorking in the modern tech stack requires the kind of broad skill set and vision that comes from long experience. I've worked in many different corporate and team settings, leveraging well-developed skills in design, implementation, troubleshooting, documentation, and team organization.Core competencies:- Debian and Fedora Linux- Python- Django- Django Rest Framework- Express.js | Node.js- Nginx | Apache web servers- PostgreSQL | MySQL | SQLite | SAP ASE- HMTL | CSS | Less.js- Perl- Bash- Redis- Java- Spring Boot- Selenium | Postman- Git | Jira | GitHub Actions- Docker- FigmaAccomplishments:- Developed the original NTT Verio branding and translation system for end users and resellers, which led to an explosive growth in Verio's retail channel.- Implemented the original Verio customer migration system, which allowed seamless moves of customers to new, less-congested data centers. This led to improved customer experiences and was the predecessor of systems that facilitated customer account upgrades.- Developed and deployed the key features of an upgraded web hosting platform, which used modern Red Hat software in place of FreeBSD. This change reduced costs by dramatically increasing server densities and allowed the platform to add sought-after features like third-party add-ons and updated authentication protocols.- Key troubleshooter for customer issues on the hosting platform, having completed thousands of such requests over the years through NTT America's internal trouble ticket system.- Completely re-wrote the mail forwarding feature of NTT America's internal customer mail handling system, eventually incorporating key add-ons like virus scanning and spam filtering. These upgrades dramatically reduced negative customer feedback. The system worked with minimal intervention for over 15 years.- As part of a project to deploy REST endpoints for a new team management system, I wrote the first clear and comprehensive specification for AAK Tele-Science documentation. I followed this by laying out the first written specification for an industry-standard software development life cycle for company use.Contact me at alexandre.dias.dacosta@gmail.com to discuss how my skill set can drive your company's success.

Back End Programmer And Time Tracker Team Lead
Back End Programmer/Time Tracker Team Lead
Currently working on back end projects to deliver REST endpoints via Django Rest Framework. Also the current leader of a team tasked with developing a time tracking application for corporate and institutional use. I've written the complete project design via GitHub projects and am responsible for all project documentation using Apache Open Office. Additionally, I've designed the complete Figma layout for the web site UI components and am currently working on some of the actual Figma designs, with PySide6 implementation to follow.
Data Annotator
Trainer and code reviewer for artificial intelligence models. Projects are divided into two parts: straightforward evaluation of AI responses to common user requests, and evaluation of responses to coding prompts. The position rather resembles doing a long series of code reviews for Python, CSS, HTML, and other common web and machine learning technologies.
President
While it is a small district, the Journey's End CDD has all the features of any other Florida special district. We are a local tax authority, maintain a budget, and hold regular public meetings. We also handle the maintenance of local infrastructure and implement improvements when needed. I've served as president for over a decade after being invited to join by the previous president. Perhaps the most characteristic feature of our board is its fiscal conservatism. Over the years we've saved the community hundreds of thousands of dollars by rejecting requests that were wasteful or unnecessary. I'm also especially proud of doing much to defuse a controversy about lake encroachments by negotiating deals with local residents and avoiding costly litigation. As a result, last year we made a large prepayment on the community's outstanding bond and implemented a tax cut. Both were measures that I proposed and for which I won approval. Combined, these changes are saving Journey's End over $115,000 in annual budget outlays and interest expenses. Currently, I spend significant time photographing our lakes and lakes in the area in an attempt to find alternatives to a very costly lake restoration project which I consider unnecessary. For more information about our district, see https://journeysendcdd.org/.
Senior Developer
Starting as a Junior Developer, within a couple of years I was promoted to Senior Developer and given broad development responsibilities. The company was originally a start-up named Hiway Technologies and was sold and renamed several times. I remained until just prior to the final divestiture to Endurance International. Over the years I wore many hats and worked for a number of different divisions within the company. These roles are reflected in many of the skills I've acquired. I worked in front-end web development and back-end development. I designed systems for mail delivery and filtering, code distribution, customer-facing UIs, data analysis, text translation, and much more. I was also very prolific at handling customer maintenance issues, having completed thousands of those via our internal support portal over the years. I was often able to quickly resolve issues that were either ignored or given incorrect answers by a succession of developers. This was something that really got under my skin, since nothing is more frustrating for a paying customer than a technical issue that no one seems able to resolve. The last three years I worked remotely for the Migrations Team that was based in Orem, Utah. We worked in a Git, Jira, and teleconferencing set-up, with the focus of our efforts being to manage the upgrade of existing customers to new hosting environments and the import of large blocks of acquired customer accounts. Due to my broad experience at NTT America, I classify myself as a generalist who's always looking to add new skills as the job demands.
Classroom Teacher And Dbase Programmer
I began as a lab instructor for remedial students in the Center For Personalized Instruction. It was a rewarding job that involved tutoring students to pass high school equivalency tests in preparation for jobs or to pursue higher education. After a while I moved to the Department of English as a Second Language. There, I became a classroom instructor for newly-immigrated students looking to develop all-important English skills. Because of my then-current programming studies, I was asked to develop a student tracking database using dBase, which at the time was a top-level database engine and query system.
