I formed Patentica in 1995, starting with the hire of two patent attorneys, growing to 120. Patentica is affiliated with over 70 major patent agencies worldwide. Acuid developed a very high speed communications technology, demonstrating over 20Gbps per pin in low cost CMOS processes. I developed the technology from concept to working silicon. A divergence in the management response to the global downturn in the comms industry led me offering to buy-out Acuid in April 2005 for £20mn, which was declined by the Acuid Board in favour of another group. The other group was not successful, allowing us to acquire Acuid's technology, staff and facilities in September 2005 at much lower cost. This enabled a large public company sale in 2007 for Acuid's primary trade investor, and provided the design resource for the growth of the Deep Life Design Team companies.As well as my role on the Board, I was personally responsible for the design of test and redundancy systems, with circuit boards combining ASICs with over 50,000 components per board, entering production smoothly and reliably.

Developed the technology that spawned Acuid Corporation (very high speed ASICs), and Deep Life Design Team (specialising in very complex systems and safety technology).Deep Life acquired Process Insight's business in 2005, including 38 design engineers and design facilities. Process Insight developed a Flash memory technology sold to San Disk in 1998 in conjunction with Memory Corporation, forming the basis of many of San Disks' Flash disk products for the past decade. Process Insight also developed high speed failure analysis and redundancy technology for Mosaid plc, subsequently sold to a major US public company.

Memory Corporation applied a safety technology (complex redundancy allocation) to commodity memories.I founded the company, developed the concept and took it through to production and break-even. I led the company from foundation in 1993 to a PLC capitalised at $400mn on the AIM Stock Market by September 1995. I resigned from Memory Corporation in March 1996 when the company planned to diversify into MP3 players, as it was outside my skills area. I bought out Memory's design centre of 40 engineers to form Process Insight, growing this to 70 engineers, before selling the redundant FLASH memory technology to San Disk, who still maintain this design group in a facility in Leith, Edinburgh.The original DRAM technology was sold by Memory Corp to a Taiwan based DRAM manufacturer, where it continued in production for a decade.

Founded Signal Resources Ltd, an electronic and ASIC design services company. We designed the very original "Bluetooth" concept CDMA prototype for Jabra Corporation and the AV range of Apple Computers: the technology won Product of the Year at Comdex in 1993. Signal Resources won numerous other industry awards with other products in speech compression and signal processing, including the John Logie Baird Award for Technology, twice. Design for high volume RF signal processing products, and safety critical systems were the bread and butter for Signal Resources. Over 50 million products originated at Signal Resources have been sold.Signal Resources was a profitable business, sold in 1994 (to Jabra Corporation and Memory Corporation plc)
