About Alex Eckman
2X successful brand builder in Michigan’s cannabis industry, turning concepts into cannabis companies for nearly a decade. Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to work in nearly every aspect of the cannabis supply chain, ranging from cultivation and processing to sales.I started in 2016 as a budtender and quickly transitioned to helping build one of the early distillate vape brands in Southeast Michigan. From there, I moved to managing a processing lab for Detroit’s first licensed medical dispensary, helping create one of the first vertically integrated caregiver companies in the area.Those experiences gave me a front-row seat to the transition from the caregiver days to a regulated market. In 2019, I took a shot at launching a licensed microgrow called Higher State Craft Cannabis. While failing to secure funding, that “failure” became a pivotal redirection.I knew cannabis was what set me on fire, so I doubled down and enrolled in Lake Superior State University’s B.S. in Cannabis Chemistry to sharpen my skills and lay the groundwork for a better vision.Balancing full-time studies while still working in the cannabis industry was tougher than expected, especially while managing several chronic health issues. But that only fueled me! I spent a short stint as a project manager for a local processing lab buildout, which made me realize that the next brand I worked to build had to be my own.In October of 2023, I sat down with a close friend I had met at LSSU, and we dusted off my old business plan. Over the next several months, we began crafting the vision for Higher State Brands; a cannabis company built on leveraging data and research to elevate the standards of quality and efficiency, while working to bring new products to market! As Co-founder and CEO, my mission is to merge studies with strategy to drive innovation and profitability.My journey isn’t just about business though. It’s about pushing the cannabis industry forward, both as a student and industry leader. As president of the Cannabis Club at Lake Superior State University and Vice President within Student Government, I’ve been a voice for cannabis students, advocating for change on campus and shaping the future of cannabis education.Now, I’m documenting every step of building Higher State Brands, sharing the highs, lows, and everything in between.
