About Alex Ethier

Over the last year I developed natural language processing and data analytics software in a big data cloud infrastructure. Our natural language processing provided document entity extraction capabilities for the U.S. Army's Red Disk 1.3 cloud deployment. This system leverages big data technologies such as Hadoop, Storm, and Accumulo to provide parallel processing over millions of documents with the ability to persist billions of rows of extracted meta data.I was directly involved in improving the entity extraction process, integrating our code to work with Cloudera's CDH4 big data platform, integrating our code to work with the latest Red Disk's UCD big data API, integrating our code to work with Accumulo 1.5, managing local storm cluster, adding Oozie compatibility with our Mapreduce jobs, supporting our big data services during deployment, and testing at customer sites.I am capable of contributing to all stages of software development. From designing new features, implementing them in code, controlling our build and deployment process, maintaining my coworkers development environment, servicing and improving the VMs on our local cloud environment, servicing customer requests, I take pride in being a contributor to every aspect of our development process.I would like to find a rewarding position where where my contributions will be felt. I like to work in a team environment where members go beyond completing their assigned tasks. Whether this is done by suggesting improvements to the development environment, suggesting new and interesting features, providing performance enhancements, or simply educating others on best practices or helpful tips, I want to be part of a team where I can learn from and help educate others.

    Worked on Cloud Text Analytics (CTA), a natural language processing and data analytics package designed to work in a big data cloud environemnt. CTA uses MapReduce and Storm to provide processing over a cluster of VM nodes and persisted data to Accumulo (a database created by the NSA based on Google’s BigTable technology)-Improved CTA's natural language processing software to extract additional entities and relationships.-Updated CTA to be compliant with army’s Reddisk 1.3 deployment of UCD data objects. -Upgraded libraries to be compatible with the latest MapReduce CDH4 cloud architecture and Accumulo 1.5-Wrote Accumulo queries to verify the integrity of persisted data.-Integrated CTA to work with Red Disk’s master workflow by configuring MapReduce code to use Oozie framework.-Wrote Puppet scripts to allow automated deployment of software. Puppet is necessary since CTA is installed on classified environments that we do not have access.Worked on Data Push Component (DPC), a project allowing inter-cloud communication over low bandwidth connections. Communication was handled by our in house Cloud Transfer Service (CTS).-Create several VMs on a prototype DPC cloud which was managed by Cloud Stack. These VMs included a deployment of CTA and CTS as well as VM for the open source messaging system Kafka.-Wrote automated testing services that make REST calls to the data transfer protocols we use in DPC.Worked on DataARCH, a tool providing user's with the ability to query data across multiple data sources.-Worked with query translation technology allowed aggregate SPARQL queries to be issued against non sparql datasources including SQL databases, REST clients, and flat files.-Added reasoning capabilities with RDF to infer new relationships between data stored within different data sources.-Wrote SQL queries to test query translation from SQL to SPARQL.
