Howdy! My name is Alex, an MBA student at Mays Business School at Texas A&M University, and I’ve learned a lot in the twelve years I’ve spent in retail.I began my professional career at nineteen, working at the JCPenney Headquarters in Plano, Texas. I was originally hired on as a contractor for the site merchandising team, but my commitment to excellence landed me a full-time job with the company. Since then, my career really took off.Over the years, I was promoted several times, and in every role I was able to tackle new opportunities in different aspects of the business including merchandising, strategy, operations, and eventually analytics. One of my most rewarding roles was helping to lead the partnership between JCPenney and Sephora, where I served as liaison between the two companies. I managed critical operations for an organization of over 80 people, who were all located in San Francisco. The entire organization relied on my ability to keep everything running smoothly. This role not only honed my skills in managing cross-functional teams, but it reinforced my commitment to ensuring that everyone had the resources they need to succeed – plus my girlfriend loved all the free makeup. You see, I did all of this without a degree, and at a certain point I couldn’t climb any higher. I was denied opportunities because I didn’t have it, which was a wake-up call for me. I decided to get serious about school, and I successfully transferred into Texas A&M University, where I recently graduated with a bachelor's degree in environmental science – all while I continued to work full-time. I learned the tremendous value of getting a degree, so why not get two? I’m currently seeking an MBA from Mays Business School at Texas A&M University, where I plan on refining my skills in analysis, developing my decision-making, and being a leader wherever possible. Post-MBA, I’m aiming to pivot my career and find new and exciting opportunities in new product development, sustainability, or strategy.
