My biomedical engineering background drives me to wonder how the world works and innovate new ways to upgrade standard practices to answer tough questions. In my Ph.D. thesis research, I generated a novel adeno-associated virus (AAV) strategy to target unique genetic subpopulations of neurons. I implemented this tool in an unstudied neuronal population to uncover the circuitry and behavioral influence these neurons hold. In our collaboration with a lab outside of my institution, my tool was shown to surpass other available intersectional targeting strategies and helped our collaborators generate pilot experiments to support their R01 grant. This project highlights my drive and passion for improving standard operating procedures and pioneering entirely new tools for answering challenging questions. In my current role, I am applying my molecular tool development skills to design and test novel therapies for neurodegenerative disease.
