About Alex Strasser

I fell in love with materials science upon reading a Popular Science article in middle school about graphene aerogels, which are the lightest substance known to man. My love was greatly deepened while working at Oak Ridge National Lab upon discovery of the miles and miles of already-mastered, quantitative science that delves far deeper than I ever knew or imagined in my "surface-level" 15 years of thus-far education. This experience turned my love into an obsession. This obsession keeps me energized, for example, to self-study Solid State Physics while taking 18 credit hours and working on two first author research publications. I am a 2nd year materials science and engineering student with a B.S. in chemical engineering with minors in physics and materials science, and I have over 5 total years of research experience in the areas of 2D materials, semiconductor physics, nanomaterial synthesis and characterization, biofuels, additive manufacturing, RF heating, optical systems, perovskite solar cells, and density functional theory. I have presented at two international scientific conferences, and I plan to get a Ph.D. in physics or materials science and become a professor.
