I aided research efforts in the active field of Ice Nucleation by testing and refining a prototype instrument and methodology for freezing droplets. This required innovation and creative problem solving to ensure that the methodology was appropriate and rigorous enough for the highly sensitive experiment.I also joined a field campaign at the Mace Head Atmospheric Research Station, Ireland, to monitor for the existence of ice nucleating particles from clean air off the Atlantic Ocean. This provided me with practical research experience in sometimes challenging conditions.

This was an industrial placement as part of my degree programme. I gained a broad understanding of ecological and environmental protection, both practically and in terms of legislation. I had to write several reports essential for further work, such as ecological audits before building work could commence, and give presentations to team members and other departments. I had the initiative to create a competition for design students to create new energy saving posters for our office which I personally managed to great success. I used several computing resources including ArcGIS.

During my time studying marine operations and working in the Pacific on board a cruise ship I gained first-hand experience of the commercial marine environment. This included knowledge of different sectors of shipping, pollution management, navigation and passenger and crew safety on board ship.I am also familiar with world and UK regulations and procedures for ship safety and pollution. This role included monitoring meteorological conditions to transmit to Met Office forecasters. I was given a position of responsibility on board ship through having to maintain lifeboats and firefighting equipment and playing a key role in emergency drills such as firefighting and man overboard drills.
