An academic leader, designer and researcher, I am Head of School of Design at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin (NCAD), one of the Top 51-100 Art & Design Colleges in the world in the QS World University Ranking by Subject 2023.I co-authored the successful bid to establish the Creative Futures Academy, receiving over €10 million in funding. The academy provides agile and responsive courses to up-skill and underpin the position of Ireland’s cultural and creative sector.I have authored 8 books including Product Design (published by Laurence King, and translated into three languages), and managed National & European research projects worth in excess of €1 Million. My creative work has been exhibited at numerous international venues including MUDAC Lausanne, Designers Block Milan, Irish Museum of Modern Art, National Museum of Scotland and 100% Design London.A former Head of Design & Applied Arts at Edinburgh College of Art, I have taught at a diverse range of institutions including Heriot-Watt University, University of Dundee, Edinburgh Napier University, Central Saint Martins and the Central Academy of Fine Art, Beijing - with my students winning dozens of international awards. I have been a visiting professor at Manchester Metropolitan University, Aston University and University College Dublin, and a Visiting Erskine Fellowship at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. I am chair of Design Educators Ireland, the representative body of third level design education providers in Ireland. I am also a Fellow of the RSA and Institute of Designers in Ireland. I was a member of the National Design Forum and the Government’s EGFSN Design Skills Implementation Group, and led a number of sectoral projects including Collaboration between Industry & Enterprise, and Developing Career Pathways in Design. As Programme Director of Irish Design 2015, I was responsible for leading and managing a government backed initiative which sought to increase the awareness, understanding and use of design in Irish society & business. The initiative delivered an 11-fold return on investment, and a direct economic impact of over €55 Million. I was subsequently commissioned by the Design and Craft Council of Ireland to develop Ireland the Design Island – Towards a National Design Strategy. Launched in 2017, this publication was the first Government-endorsed design strategy In Ireland since the iconic 1961 Scandinavian Report. I see creative education as having the responsibility and power to build a platform for positive cultural, economic and social change.

The School of Design offers the largest range of design degrees in Ireland at undergraduate and postgraduate level, with graduates regularly winning major international and national awards.As a member of the college management team I have co-developed the college’s new ‘bold and curious learning’ strategic plan and Higher Education Authority (HEA) compact, leading a number of compact projects including research, innovation and engagement, and establishing NCAD’s new Design Labs. All of which has contributed to our continued rise up the QS world rankings by subject.In addition to my role as Head of School, I am also the institutional lead for the Creative Futures Academy - a consortium led by NCAD, in partnership with IADT, UCD and the creative sector, including the Arts Council, Design & Craft Council, Institute of Designers in Ireland, RTÉ and Screen Ireland. The HCI funded project was awarded over €10 million, and seeks to empower creative practitioners with the sustainable and adaptable skills and attributes that they will require to shape the future of Ireland’s creative sector.I have led the development of new blended, online, low residency and intensive learning options for students, housed within a new programme architecture that incorporates stackable microcredentialed options for early and mid-career creative practitioners ranging from 5 credit Professional Certificates through to 90 credit MA’s. This has enabled the college to transform our learning frameworks to facilitate new agile and flexible approaches with, and for, the Cultural and Creative Industries, and led to unprecedented levels of inter and intra higher education institutional engagement. -

Institutional LeadCreative Futures Academy 2020 - PresentI am NCAD's Institutional Lead for the Creative Future Academy, a €10 million government funded consortium led by NCAD, in partnership with IADT, UCD and the creative sector. The academy aims to empower creative practitioners from a range of disciplines, and at different stages of their learning, with the sustainable and adaptable skills and attributes that they will require to shape the future of Ireland’s creative sector. I co-authored the funding application, and I am a member of the academy's Management Committee. I have led the development of an innovative programme architecture that is facilitating the launch of an ambitious suite of over 15 new postgraduate awards.

ChairDesign Educators Ireland 2018 - PresentI am chairperson of the representative body for third level design education in Ireland. As chair I seek to ensure that DEI contributes to the development of design education in Ireland, enhancing its standing and stature as well as supporting its engagement with industry, government and wider society. Established in 2018, DEI provides a unique forum for debate and the exchange of ideas and best practice affecting the education of designers in Ireland. There are over 5000 students and researchers currently studying design at Irish Universities, Institutes of Technology and Colleges, and the sector is rapidly expanding to meet the needs of industry and humanity.DEI’s mission is to contribute to the development of the design sector and community, its standing and stature as well as its engagement with the outside world. We have led and contributed to a number of Design Skills Implementation projects for the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment. -

The overall goal of the project was to increase the awareness, understanding and use of design in Irish society, and to promote Irish design capability internationally, in order to sustain employment and generate new jobs in the sector. Irish Design 2015 formed part of the Irish Government’s Action Plan for Jobs.Major outcomes included:• An 11 fold return on investment, resulting in a direct economic impact of €55.44 million• 1.7million exhibition attendees, 24.6 million installation viewers, 17.8k workshop participants, 26.8k talks/symposium attendees, a digital audience of 1.2 million and 130k social media followers and unique website users• 6486 Irish designers/companies showcased on the island of Ireland• 476 Irish designers/companies showcased internationally• 370 new design businesses registered in Ireland during 2015• Over 17,000 designers receiving training• Over 1,500 business professionals receiving design training• 80+ corporate and strategic partnerships created• Generating sponsorship and philanthropic donations totaling over €5.2 million• Dublin awarded the status of 2015 IAD World Design Hub• Exhibitions developed with V&A, Design Museum London and Vitra Design Museum• Policy Framework for Design in Enterprise in Ireland launched I was subsequently commissioned to develop the Ireland the design island – Towards a National Design Strategy for the Irish government, a document, which sought to embed design policy within all Government departments and State Agencies in Ireland. Head Of The Faculty Of Design (Dean) And Professor Of DesignNational College Of Art & Design 2012 - 2014Dublin, IrelandAs Head of the Faculty of Design, I was responsible for the management of the Design disciplines within the College. I introduced a new design curriculum focused on creativity, research and business, which encourages NCAD to compete on an international stage, tapping into the craft, design & technology skillbase and heritage within Ireland. Alongside building this enhanced pedagogical platform, I fostered a new research & commercialisation agenda that resulted in a significant increase in annual commercialisation income through the creation of Origin8, a new design innovation hub. I managed a number of major research grants as Project Coordinator or Institutional Lead and Co-Investigator worth in excess of €1 million, and I was the conference chair for the Cumulus international design conference, ‘More for Less – Design in an Age of Austerity’, held in Dublin in November 2013.The National College of Art and Design occupies a unique position in art and design education in Ireland. It offers the largest range of art and design degrees in the State at undergraduate and postgraduate level. In the past many of the most important Irish artists, designers and art teachers have studied or taught in the College, and it has long been the central and most important art and design educational institution in Ireland. NCAD’s position in the university sector was consolidated by the Academic Alliance with University College Dublin, and it has been ranked among the top 100 Art and Design colleges in the world, according to the QS World University Rankings. -

The School of Textiles & Design is the second oldest textile institution in the world, dating back to 1883, and the team sought to build on the legacy of the Scottish College of Textiles, and develop a new sustainable and vibrant future for the renowned institution. I was directly responsible for the management and strategic development of the Research and Knowledge Exchange Activities, REF preparations and documentation for the School and Unit of Assessment. I was responsible for the development of new collaborations between the School and the wider University, such as the Creativity, Design and Innovation research theme; as well as inter-institutional initiatives such as the Scottish Academy of Fashion which received £500k of SFC funding. I was also responsible for authoring and validating a new undergraduate programme in Interior Design delivered in the Universities Scottish and Dubai Campuses, as well as a new suite of postgraduate programmes that resulted in dramatically improved domestic and international recruitment levels. -
