My work focuses on issues of sexual and reproductive health and rights and work at the intersections of public health, social medicine, gender studies and African studies. I am particularly interested in how criminalisation and other state repression impact the health and well-being of marginalised groups. In Berlin, I investigate the ways in which Germany's restrictive abortion regulations influence the availability of and pathways to abortion care. In Southern Africa, I work with civil society organisations to identify and document the impact of repressive state laws and policies, including colonial sodomy laws, on healthcare access and health disparities based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Throughout, I am most interested in how structural inequities and repression manifest in the lives and health of people holding marginalised identities (based on, e.g. race, class, gender, sexual orientation). Whilst I employ both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, these are firmly grounded in feminist, queer and post-colonial frameworks. I conduct empirical research to support evidence-based advocacy and strategic litigation efforts to further social and reproductive justice.
