A little about myself, my name is Alex Murillo Sotelo, but you can just call me Alex. I have been a Mental Health Clinician for four years in November 2023. Prior to working in the mental health field, I was a Child Care Worker at Valley Teen Ranch and a Counselor I at DN Associates. I worked with at-risk youth, primarily males, between the ages of 13 and 20, who themselves were living with trauma, abuse, neglect, abandonment, depression, anxiety, psychosis, and conduct. While working these group homes, now known as Short Term Residential Programs (STRP) I was in the California Army National Guard for eight years between 2011 and 2019 as an Motor Transit Operator and a Team Leader in charge of two to three soldiers. While I was in the National Guard, I went to California State University, Fresno and majored in Criminology with an emphasis in Law Enforcement; however, life had other plans for me. While in the National Guard, I was fortunate to be part of the Honor Guard. The Honor Guard is a group of people, usually military in nature, appointed to receive or guard a head of state or other dignitaries, the fallen in war, or to attend state ceremonials, especially funerals. While in the Honor Guard, I unfortunately conducted the funeral service of a Sergeant who initially introduced me to my former unit back in 2011, which inevitably led me to pursue a career working with individuals who live with anxiety, depression, psychosis, and trauma. With the support of my family I was able to return to CSU, Fresno in 2017 and in 2019 I received my Masters degree in Social Work.I am now an Associate Clinical Social Worker (ASW) at Turning Point RMH and I work alongside individuals who experience moderate to severe mental health symptoms ranging from anxiety, depression, psychosis, and trauma. I believe that one can not heal or manage their symptom or stressors without caring for one's physical and mental health, as what affects the mind will impact the body and what affects the body will impact the mind; thus, I utilize evidence based practices such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to address our automatic negative thoughts to create/manage more long term adaptive beliefs or schemas and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) to address our awareness, acceptance, ability to tolerate distress, regulate/manage our emotions, interpersonal communication, and ability to think dialectically to reduce and manage their stressors and mental health symptoms.
