As an enthusiastic professional passionate about the textile industry and a staunch believer in fostering a healthy and safe environment for communities, I am Alex Musembi, the co-founder of Africa Collect Textile (ACT)-a social impact enterprise that collects used textiles and footwear for reuse and recycling in Africa.Our mission is to not only establish a sustainable future for the fashion industry but also to reduce the impact the fashion industry has on our planet. According to the Ellen Mac Arthur Foundation, the textile industry is the 2nd highest source of pollution worldwide, emitting 10% of global carbon dioxide annually. At ACT, we have already made tremendous progress, by installing collection infrastructure (collection points), collecting over 150,000Kgsof post consumer textiles, curbing 450 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and providing employment opportunities to numerous members of our local communities. With every kilo collected ,10 shillings goes to charity or to our collection partners.Looking ahead, the goal for the next decade is for ACT to collect and recycle at least half of Kenya's used textiles, reducing landfilling with textiles and footwear and expanding our collection network, so we can recycle an even wider range of materials.We therefore ask for your support to our mission to achieve a cleaner, sustainable future for generations to come.
