About Alex O'Brien

Alex O’Brien is owner and president of BOC Bank, a fintech bank based out of Amarillo, TX. O’Brien and his family purchased the bank in 2000 with the intent to create a core software to offer customers lower cost, transparent banking. O’Brien is a Stanford University graduate with a bachelor's degree in American Studies. He enjoyed a 10-year career in professional tennis, highlighted by a world No. 1 doubles ranking, US Open doubles title, appearance in the Sydney Olympics, career high No. 30 singles ranking, and five Davis Cup appearances. After tennis, O’Brien continued his education in business and banking by attending UCLA’s Management and Development for Entrepreneurs program, as well as, Texas Tech Rawls School of Banking, and Southwestern Graduate School of Banking.

    Alex O’Brien joined BOC Bank, formerly Bank of Commerce, as a board member and owner in 2000. The bank was originally bought by the W. H. O’Brien family to create a financial technology bank that could offer efficiencies through programming a sophisticated core software with the ability to process real time transactions. W. H. O’Brien, Alex’s father, felt that businesses and agriculture companies suffered with banks holding their money for too long and that there was little ability to move money quickly. W. H. O’Brien had a vision to create faster, more transparent payment systems to allow financial transactions of all kinds to happen in real time. 
Alex O’Brien stepped into the role of bank president in 2008 and continues to promote a vision of transparent low-cost systems enabled through technology to offer BOC Bank clients a better and more cost-effective solution. BOC Bank is a part of the new wave of fintech banks that are using in-house technology to create friction-free business. BOC Bank offers many services, including deposit accounts without monthly charges, proprietary Pay-a-Friend money transfer service, and mobile check deposit. On the commercial side, there’s a loan application center with a proprietary document upload and eSign software. BOC Bank also offers home mortgages, commercial loans and agricultural loans and continues to develop new technologies to help its customers.
