The plant metallurgist is the local subject matter expert on the material science and quality control of manufactured metals. Duties entail failure analysis and reporting for the quality operating system, internal auditing of all heat treat operations, and verification support for welding operations. Because questions and requests are received from many different departments within the plant, the goal is to share the material science insights that add value to the entire manufacturing system in a concise and actionable manner.Subject areas include wrought low alloy steel, cast iron, cast aluminum, metallography, failure analysis, problem solving, and a variety of test instrumentation.

Responsibilities included a variety of lab tasks including instrument operation and maintenance, materials characterization, test engineering, and research and development.
