I recently completed a Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing Engineering from Brigham Young University and officially started my career. My studies emphasized Lean manufacturing, data analysis, automation, CAD and CAM, process design, and technical communication, and I took elective classes to learn more about GD&T and tool design, PTC's ThingWorx, and Design for X (DFX).In my position as a Process Engineer at Purple, I further improved many of these skills in addition to gaining experience with DMAIC and PDCA methodologies and Lean tools like 5S, standard work, and visual management. I'm extremely pleased I was able to help Purple in reducing their TRIR to 1.26, saving $600k per year through improving first-pass yield, and reducing scrap generation by 59%,I first knew I wanted to be an engineer when I was in my early teens. I toured the Celestial Seasonings plant in Boulder, Colorado and was enthralled by the machine they had for folding boxes. The ingenuity behind the process, the simplicity of the design, and the precision with which it worked made me appreciate that THIS is what engineering is all about. From then on, I knew I wanted to be an engineer, and I've been working towards it ever since.I pride myself on my ability to work well in a team; my commitment to tasks, goals, and people; and my drive for self-improvement. A combination of these traits has helped me accomplish a lot: Designing a robot EOAT for Toyota as part of my Capstone project, reaching the rank of 2nd-degree Black Belt in mixed martial arts, becoming an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America, and convincing the love of my life to marry me.

As a process engineer, my work focused on improving the various manufacturing processes throughout the Grantsville facility using Lean practices and methodologies. In this role, I promoted standard work by creating work instructions and improving the training process, worked with operators and with the heads of multiple departments, collected and analyzed data from tests and time-and-motion studies to validate proposed changes, and designed facility layouts and flowcharts to ensure product flow and efficiency would be enhanced after changes were implemented.The changes my team and I made increased throughput by 32%, improved first-pass yield by 62%, reduced scrap by 59%, and reduced Purple's TRIR to a world-class 1.26. Through these improvements and others, we were able to save Purple an estimated 1.2 million per year while improving both safety and quality.

My internship revolved around developing and implementing a process improvement plan for 7 distinct manufacturing lines in the Compass Minerals solar evaporation plant in Ogden, Utah. To do this, I collaborated with 20+ operators, supervisors, and mangers to identify problems with the manufacturing processes and analyzed 2,000+ maintenance records to determine what issues were the most detrimental to the plant. Using this information, I developed 3 possible solutions for improving plant uptime by 20% and presented it to multiple levels of managers for consideration. Unfortunately, my internship ended before the changes could be implemented, so I was unable to confirm the results of my efforts.

As a volunteer representative, I interacted with 100+ people each day to provide instruction and counsel. I worked with at least one other person at all times and worked with a different person every 2-3 months. I learned conflict resolution, cooperation, communication, and teaching skills, and I also became conversationally fluent in Spanish and learned to connect and establish rapport with the various people I came in contact with.. My coworkers and I were responsible for our own schedules and self-reported to leadership on a weekly basis regarding our success and goals. For 10 months of my time in Peru I was also responsible for managing, instructing, and helping 6-8 other representatives and presided over weekly meetings with them.For 5 months I also worked in the central offices of the northern Lima branch, where I was responsible for various secretarial duties, such as coordinating transportation for 100+ other representatives on a monthly basis, creating training materials and distributing them to the other representatives in the northern Lima branch, managing visa and international travel information, and compiling and drafting an instruction manual for these and other complex tasks. I am most proud of reorganizing and improving the system for cell phone use and distribution for the entire northern Lima branch. Although I didn't work in finances, I estimate this saved hundreds of dollars each month, and the documentation I created for this system ensured its survival after I left the branch.
