Profile bio

About Alex Tran

I am a creative person and versatile learner, that thrives on finding real-world applications for my data analysis and research expertise. I am a self-taught coder, with experience in R, Python, SQL and MATLAB. As a Scientific Associate at Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (IMHPR department) working with Dr. Jurgen Rehm and Dr, Shannon Lange, I dove deep into epidemiological time series data from North America and Europe. Using my research and data analysis skills, I produced evidence via scientific publications that showed the effectiveness of alcohol policy on health indicators. My work has been shared with policy makers across many meetings and conferences and is used to support policy making decisions at the governmental level. As a Scientific Consultant for the World Health Organization I reviewed and became an expert on the scientific literature regarding motivations to consume alcohol. I designed a survey and created a data pipeline to continuously ingest data collected for a 1-year period. I tested the types of alcohol warning labels which would best inform individuals of the risks of alcohol consumption and its relation to cancer knowledge. The findings of this research, funded by the European Union, will directly support efforts to improve alcohol labelling in Europe. I am always seeking an opportunity to apply my passion for learning, and inherent curiosity. I love to use my research skills to explore the nuance of different topics, and to inform and advise others on my findings. Combined with my skilled manipulation of data, I enjoy drawing meaningful insights about human behaviour and translating those findings to a wider audience.
