Kess Masters By Research StudentshipBangor University Nov 2013 - Apr 2015School Of Ocean Sciences, Menai BridgeMy research masters was conducted in partnership with Natural Resources Wales (NRW), funded by the EU and NRW through the Knowledge Exchange Scholarship Scheme (KESS). Work was conducted as part of Dr Andrew Davies Marine Ecology and Technology group, School of Ocean Sciences, Bangor University. The project focused on the development and utilisation of novel and existing low cost remote sensing equipment, using the resulting data to improve understanding of the role that temperate biogenic reef forming species can play in coastal defence strategies in the UK, and EU.Pressure time-series and photogrammetric 3D measurements of reef structure were collected across Sabellaria reefs around the Welsh coast, with a focus on periods of high storm activity (Sept-March). A toolset for spectral and zero-crossing wave analysis in the nearshore environment was then coded in the Python language for scientific computing, and applied successfully to derive the wave friction factor, a dimensionless measure of the dissipative effect of coastal surfaces on incident wave energy. Measurements of physical roughness and structural complexity across multiple scales of observation were then used to estimate the correlation of biogenic structures physical roughness with observed wave dissipation and transformation, by relation to observed measures of energy dissipation computed from pressure sensor time series data collected in-situ. Results of the study offer some progress towards the estimation and model parameterisation of wave dissipation effects by the biogenic reefs of Sabellaria alveolata, and hint towards the potential of utilising easily obtainable physical measurements of the coastal structure to inform understanding of coastal biogenic reef's interaction with local hydrodynamics.
