About Alex Zobel

My book project rehabilitates georgic literature, an obsolete literary mode that uses agriculture to understand the relationships between nature, work, and politics. Georgic literature is a lens for understanding the massive changes to the way work was re-evaluated in the post-Reformation period. My research expertise is in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century English literature and in the environmental humanities. Other research and teaching interests include ecocriticism, the history of science and agriculture, composition, early modernity, rhetoric, pedagogy and service learning (i.e., the engaged humanities), creative writing (fiction & poetry), early-modern popular and print culture, and critical theory and philosophy with wide-ranging hobbyhorses such as political philosophy, ecosophy, metaphysics, ontology, epistemology, science, work, psychoanalysis.

The Mellon Foundation's Sawyer Seminars create temporary research centers focused on a given topic, and they aim to encourage comparative and interdisciplinary discussion. This seminar focuses on the emerging field of the environmental humanities, by bringing leading scholars in environmental history, environmental philosophy, ecocriticism, and other disciplines to UCLA. As one of two graduate student fellows, I participate in monthly reading-based seminars with scholars from around the world on topics such as the anthropocene, environmentalisms of the poor, environments and technologies, trans-species and multi-species perspectives, and decline and resilience.

I served as the graduate student in charge of TA training and pedagogy. My duties included teaching a model English course open to observation for other TAs in the department, co-designing and co-teaching the two-quarter pedagogy sequence for new TAs, researching and presenting various theoretical and practical pedagogical models, advised and counseling first-year TAs, and observing first-year TAs in their classes and consulting with them on teaching strategies, and consulting with first-year and advanced TAs on teaching issues such as suspected plagiarism, text selection, paper assignments, grading, teacher-student dynamics, TA-professor relations, teaching sensitive topics, and time-management challenges. I also served as a liaison between English Department TAs and the Office of Instructional Development and participated in a weekly two-hour seminar with all other TACs on campus, and in a campus-wide pedagogy conference.
