Universities around the world generate 1000’s of pieces of Intellectual Property (IP) every year but most of them are never commercialised. This situation represents a significant experiential learning opportunity that I am tackling in the development of a capstone project unit. Through this unit we will offer students access to the protected but not yet commercialised IP and take them through the first stages of the commercialisation process. The unit emphasises experiential learning, a flipped classroom and immediate feedback as a way to engage students with real world entrepreneurship. Students learn by proposing and immediately testing hypotheses. They get out of the classroom and talk to customers, partners and competitors and encounter the chaos and uncertainty of commercialising innovation and creating new ventures. All of the resulting work will be collected in a portfolio of research and findings with the top performers having the opportunity to present the concept to investors.

Launched in 2008, the Genesis Program is the longest-running entrepreneurship program at the University of Sydney. Open campus-wide, we have helped over 1000 students, staff and alumni to develop their business idea including access to mentors and industry leaders, networking, pitching opportunities and $25,000 equity-free cash.

I work at the university in a number of different capacities including course design and writing, guest lecturing and tutoring for both postgraduate and undergraduate students. Atma - Immersive Journeys was a small group tour company with a difference. We worked directly with local communities to help them create and run tours through their country and culture. This way the community is in charge of its own tourism and the revenue generated from the travel is managed by the community.

Atma Cycles was the only not-for-profit social enterprise bicycle brand in the world. We supplied premium bicycles targeted to the commuter market through our network of 32 local bicycle shops around Australia. For every bicycle sold, one was given to a schoolgirl in India so that she could get an education and lift herself and her family out of poverty.

Yunus&Youth exists to make the challenge of social entrepreneurship easier. Y&Y was inspired by the work of Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus and his belief that companies and entrepreneurs can engage in business models that create real sustainable social impact.
