About Alexa Thompson

Having grown up close to the ocean my whole life, I have seen the impacts of climate change firsthand, from eroding coastal cliffs to habitat loss. As a result, I knew that pursuing an education in Civil and Environmental Engineering would allow me to make a change in the world. In the Summer of 2024, I had the opportunity to spend a month in China, where I worked with PhD students and Professor Yan Xiao on research and experiments for the world's first multi-story bamboo structure. This experience was fulfilling to me because there was such a focus on sustainability that I had never experienced before. During my month in China, I learned that a career focusing on sustainability and the environment is important to me. Additionally, I'm knowledgeable in AutoCAD and Bluebeam from my two summers (2023-2024) with Mangano Design Engineering and Permitting (MDEP) as a Structural Intern. I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with an environmental emphasis and will start my Master's in Civil Engineering in the spring of 2025.
