About Alex Albans

Landscape specialist with over 20 years’ experience in research, teaching, writing, project delivery and cross-boundary collaboration. In my current role as research fellow and lecturer at BCU I teach landscape architecture students from level 4 (1st year undergraduate) to level 7 (postgraduate), lead a level 7 module and am personal tutor to level 4 students. As researcher and project coordinator with BCU's West Midlands National Park Lab, I have been integral to recent projects including 'Number 11: Know Your Place' funded by The British Academy, 'Re-imagining Resilient Landscapes' with Natural England, and the United Nations Habitat 'Urban Thinkers Campus: Towards an International Landscape Convention'.My 2 most recent publications are: 'Placemaking on a Wider Scale: Seeing the Bigger Picture', in Higgins and Larkham (2024) Placemaking: People, Properties, Planning. Leeds: Emerald Publishing. and 'Second Site' in Oles and Horrigan (2024) Fieldwork in Landscape Architecture: Methods, Actions, Tools. Abingdon: Routledge.Building on my role at The University of Warwick's research impact department and experience compiling and writing a 4* REF2021 impact case study for BCU, I am working with colleagues at BCU's faculty of Art Design and Media to help embed Impact within UoA32 and prepare for REF2029.I am currently studying for an MA in West Midlands History at The University of Birmingham to enhance my understanding of how places developed over time and further enhance my research and analytical skills in understanding and interpreting the relationships people have with the world around them. My MA thesis (in preparation) is an exploration of the changing relationship between the River Tame and the people in its catchment over time.
