About Alexander Clute
We have all heard the age-old saying, “If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.” This is a statement that I never truly understood as a child or even as a young man. It wasn’t until a few years into my enlistment in the United States Marine Corps that I began to understand it. My first understanding was while I was deployed to Afghanistan in 2011 as an infantryman. On one specific day, my supervisor and I were speaking to village elders in the area in which we were operating. It was during these talks with the local leaders that I truly began to understand how much we were helping the people who lived there. One village elder had teared up when explaining how horrid life had been while dealing with the Taliban prior to our intervention. That is when my eyes began to open, and I started to realize what that age-old saying meant. Still, I couldn’t figure out why it was that my job did not feel like work, when overseas. I first thought it was due to the connection that I had developed with the men that served with me every day. It wasn’t until I was moved to a different specialty of work that I came to realize that wasn’t what made my work feel like more. Due to medical and personal changes, my command had moved me from a career I loved to work behind a desk. At first, this was earth shattering for me. I believed that I was robbed of what made my life have meaning. My command had assigned me to a billet known as a Substance Abuse Control Officer (SACO). This job entailed many new duties, which I was unfamiliar with. I was to perform periodical and random drug testing to ensure a safe work environment. Additionally, I was to coordinate treatment efforts in relation to substance abuse or misuse for all the Marines and Sailors under our unit’s command that needed it. At first, my job was exactly that: a job. Something that I found troubling was that most often, the people coming into my office did not want to be there. It was not until about seven months after my appointment as the Unit SACO that I received my first self-referral. This man was a Marine who was seriously struggling with an addiction to alcohol. He reported numerous concerns about his drinking habits and genuinely wanted help. It was the following months of working with this Marine to achieve and maintain sobriety that helped open my eyes a little more to understand why working in Afghanistan had felt so good. It wasn’t the work itself or even who I was working with that made my job worthwhile. What made me love my work and gave me purpose was an ability to help others.
