Working for the BBC has been a high point in my career thus far. In the time since I joined the Look North team I have gained the experience of working in a professional newsroom. My work with the technical team has shown me the realities of producing live content on a day to day basis from the value of forward planning and teamwork to how to react when unforeseen problems arise so that the programme can continue without those problems being noticed by the viewer. My time here has also taught me how big a role teamwork can play in the production of high quality content within a tight but realistic deadline and how the input of several members of the team can improve the quality of a piece while reducing the time it takes to produce it. It’s not just my own work I’ve had the opportunity to learn from in my time here, however. Since beginning work at the BBC I’ve been able to see how my colleagues produce pieces and have begun to retroactively look at my own work and see how I might have improved it then and how I might improve it if I were ever to do a similar piece in the future. Overall, I’d say my time with Look North and Radio Humberside has been the most useful experience I have had since I first learned journalism. Learning from professionals, whom I have the highest respect for, has taught me how to work well within a team and how to improve my own individual work.

As of December 2020, I took up a position with ITV regional news in the Tyne Tees and border region in order to expand on my skills and newsroom experience from what I had in Hull.While there I got to meet and learn from a fantastic team that taught me new ways and styles of working and I've thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Among the new skills, I learned the most valuable one would be sound mixing a programme that is a fantastic role to have.

After pitching a story to the Inside Out team I then assisted in multiple aspects of producing long form content including researching the history of the story from multiple sources, interviewee selection, interviews for background research, filming and transcription of rushes. The majority of my time at Inside Out was spent conducting background research within the community for the story and preparing interviewees.

My time working for That's TV had an important impact on my career. During my time there, I worked as a self-shooting Journalist, producer and presenter. Due to the way local TV operates, I had to work very independently and I gained extensive experience I would not otherwise have had about the practicalities of Journalism, such as filming subjects and set-up shots and writing to a deadline for content that would go to air. The small team size at the company meant I also gained experience of producing content every day, sometimes filming two different stories, editing one of them and setting up a third all in the same day. I very much enjoyed being involved with a programme from start to end, getting to plan my own stories, oversee how the packages looked, presenting and making the programme itself and getting to put the skills I learned at University to real world use. My time at That’s TV also gave me experience of covering breaking news, being in Manchester at the time of the Arena bombing, our coverage was not only shown at sister stations around the country but nominated for an award. Working at That’s TV gave me vital experience that will stand me in good stead and gave me the opportunity to work with some very talented reporters, many of whom I also have great respect for. Above all I would say my time with the company taught me about the pressures of the news industry and my ability to rise to them.
