The Chief Community Health Officer is the SSM Health executive responsible for directing efforts across SSM Health for addressing the Social Determinants and of Health and Health Equity, aligning the strategic vision for SSM Health for better health in the communities we serve. The CCHO provides leadership, direction, management, and administration of all community health activities and programs for SSM Health. The CCHO works with regional acute care and medical group presidents and their leadership teams, other healthcare systems, community benefit organizations, social and political leaders, to advance and integrate community health strategies and partnerships into SSM Health operational strategies, and directly contribute to SSM Health’s “essentiality” within each community. The CCHO builds strong relationships with public and private organizations in each of SSM’s markets who are engaged in the shared goal of improving community health and well-being as well as social justice. This position works closely with Government Relations to support and integrate community health strategies, especially those designed to benefit the economically poor, into SSM Health’s Advocacy efforts. The CHO interfaces with government officials; representing and advocating SSM Health objectives in equity and social justice issues that impact the community’s health and other issues pertaining to SSM Health.

I was appointed by President Obama and confirmed by the US Senate as the Assistant Secretary for Health Affairs and Chief Medical Officer of the Department of Homeland Security where I served from 2009 - 2013. I was the principal health advisor to the Secretary of Homeland Security and Administrator of FEMA and routinely breifed the White House on health and security issues. I briefed and testified before Congress on multiple issues involving security and health. As the senior health official within DHS, I was responsible for all aspects of health threats to National Security including weapons of mass destruction, Biosurviellance, disaster response and operational medicine. I oversaw an office of over 200 health, science and security professionals with a budget of over $160M annually. Over my career at DHS, I oversaw multiple complex security and health issues and worked with various communities to develop policy and operational solutions.

As the Associate Director and Director of EMS, I I was medical director for Metropolitan Ambulance Services Trust (MAST) overseeing 350 Paramedics and EMT’s in a high performance public utility model system, as well as 800 Firefighter first responders in the Kansas City Missouri Fire Department. I oversaw the quality of care delivered by EMS personnel, developed policies and protocols and trained the workforce. During my tenure, the system more than doubled the survival rate from out of hospital cardiac arrest making it one of the best systems in the country as well as achieving remarkable response time compliance
