Interpreter

Fort Abraham Lincoln Foundation

The responsibilities of an Historical Interpreter for the Fort Abraham Lincoln Foundation would expand my experience with public history in a number of unusual ways. From the first, I learned to integrate my previous experience as an interpreter into regular methods of historical re-enactment. Living the part of a Cavalryman with the U.S. 7th Cavalry, 1876; I would give in-character tours of the Historic Custer House, the last residence of the infamous George Armstrong Custer. My time would also be spent leading tours of the more traditional and informational variety, of the foundation's second and equally interesting site, the "Village-on-a-Slant," Mandan Native settlement. With a interdisciplinary focus on issues of History, Anthropology, Geography, Geology and Biology; the variety of material covered in my regular extrapolations concerning the Mandan people (the Nu'eta), allowed the chance to always find a point of interest for any visitor to the Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park.

May 2009 - Sep 2009

Historical Interpreter And Researcher

North Dakota State Historical Society

My work with the North Dakota State Historical Society entailed a summer internship with the Chateau de Mores, state historic site. While I worked as an interpretive guide for the Chateau site and museum, my primary responsibilities lay with the leading and design of the Historic Walking Tour of Medora. Within an hour's time frame, I led visitors through over 130 years of history in Medora and the surrounding Badlands, including several historical re-enactment figures. Complimentary to my work as an interpretive guide were my responsibilities as a researcher. Over the course of the summer, I collected, analyzed and cataloged several Oral Histories from longtime Medora Residents and compiled the audio and transcript records for the State Archives.
