What I enjoy most about this job is the interaction I get with freshmen and sophomores as they go through the beginning stages of finding their career paths in science, mathematics, and engineering. I have recently completed my first full, academic year working as a Physics Lab TA and grader. My responsibilities during this job consist of leading/teaching an undergraduate, calculus-based physics II lab as well as grading homework, quizzes, and lab reports.

This was an opportunity to interact with new members of the Attebury Honors Program, most of whom were incoming freshmen. I worked with the director and several other upperclassmen who were experienced in the Honors Program. We lead meaningful discussion about culture and society, especially in global contexts and its relevance to local community. The primary discussion was propelled by the reading of "The Murmur of the Bees," by Sofía Segovia, a book set during the Spanish Influenza Pandemic of 1918. This spurred much conversation regarding the contemporary COVID-19 pandemic.

This is a job where I further develop my communication and presentation skills by giving mini-lectures on engineering subjects while sharpening my ability to quickly solve engineering problems. I get the opportunity to work with students of many backgrounds and discover effective methods of teaching engineering concepts. I currently SI for Engineering Dynamics.

Branson, Missouri

I came to work here as part of the Navigators Collegiate Ministries during a Summer Training Program of discipleship and evangelism. The Navigators partnered with Silver Dollar City to allow us to work while going through our training. As an attractions host, I was assigned to the Powder Keg roller coaster where my chief responsibilities included: checking guests for loose articles, checking all restraints, and giving clearance to dispatch the train in a safety-critical environment. Skills nurtured during this position included the ability to remain alert for long periods of time doing repetitive work, positive host-guest relations, and greeting guests during down-time for weather or other causes.

Colleyville, Texas

Here I functioned as a waiter or food server at a retirement community. Duties included taking orders, bringing out orders, seeing to the needs of residents, busing dishes and silverware, and setting tables. Working here has provided exposure to working with elderly people. Some key lessons learned here included humility towards the elderly, patience with more difficult residents, and speed in cleaning many tables. This was a fast-paced work environment in which my coworkers and I raced to clean up the fastest.

Bridgeport, Texas

Worked at a camp called Sid Richardson Scout Ranch (SR2) as a merit badge counselor for the first aid and space exploration merit badges while also helping out on dining hall staff. Duties of the counselor position included creating a syllabus which covers the requirements of the first aid and space exploration merit badges, and guiding scouts (ages 11-14) through the lessons. The number of scouts per session ranged from 11-16 and a separate class having 66 scouts. Important lessons this has taught me is patience with younger scouts, and conflict resolution with staff members. It has also shown me how much I enjoy working with young people and the joy of both teaching and learning from them.
