I am a historian of empire, focusing primarily on the 19th century, and on Russian colonialism in Central Asia. My background is in South Asian history, and much of my work is comparative, looking at the Russian experience alongside that of other European empires, in particular British India. Most of my work to date has concentrated on understanding the nuts and bolts of how Russian imperial rule functioned (or failed to do so), what I suppose is best described as political and administrative history (which in Russian Central Asia means a considerable focus on the social background and institutional culture of the military) and the ways in which the local population engaged with, exploited and suffered from these new structures of power. I am also interested in Russian imperial ideologies. I have taught courses in Russian, Central Asian, South Asian and British Imperial History - currently I teach a standard course on the 'History of Kazakhstan' taken by all undergraduates at Nazarbayev University, courses in Indian history from the 18th century to the present day, and an advanced course in the diplomatic and transnational history of the Russian empire. I am the director of the MA programme in Eurasian Studies in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, which I helped to design and establish in 2014.I am currently Vice-Chair of the Faculty Senate of Nazarbayev University,
