Recognized for their groundbreaking work in leveraging AI and Machine Learning to address intersex conditions, they spearhead an AIM AHEAD-funded project aimed at enhancing the detection and recognition of intersex variations.A subsequent larger NIH award was granted through AIM HAEAD in 2024 to initiate the ARCH Collaborative iset to revolutionize healthcare in Hawai'i. By overcoming technical and ethical hurdles, this initiative paves the way for equitable access to emerging AI tools. Tailored to Hawai'i's unique health ecosystem, the ARCH Concierge and 'AI Navigators' will enhance care for marginalized communities, addressing stark health disparities and provider shortages through stakeholder-driven, phase-oriented development and training, ultimately future-proofing healthcare across the islandsAwarded the Board of Regents Medal for Excellence in Teaching by the University of Hawai'i in 2023 and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology since 2019, Dr. Stokes's contributions to science and education are significant. With an H-index of 25, their scholarly work spans over 50 publications in ion channel physiology, cardiovascular research, and data science applications in drug target identification.Supported by NSF, including a $10M INCLUDES Alliance grant, Dr. Stokes focuses on social justice in data science research and advancing education and scholarships for under-represented students. Their current project seeks to develop AI/ML algorithms for the improved diagnosis of intersex individuals, aiming to decrease under-diagnosis, enhance health equity, and foster a better understanding of intersex variations. As an intersex person, Dr. Stokes brings a unique perspective to their research, underscoring the importance of diverse voices in biomedical research. Their work aims to confront health inequities faced by the intersex population, advocating for informed medical decision-making and policy development that accurately reflects the needs of this marginalized group. Through innovative research and advocacy, Dr. Stokes is dedicated to improving the lives of intersex individuals by addressing structural health inequities and fostering a more inclusive and equitable healthcare landscape.
