During my recent involvement in the Geography and Environmental Studies Program at the University of Minnesota Duluth, I was introduced to the knowledge and skills necessary to analyze an organization’s level of sustainability in reference to their energy use. I have taken part in field studies with research topics ranging from biology to geomorphology and water processes. With a focus on Geographic Information Sciences I have learned how to take raw data and compute it to a visually stimulating form of information. With a Minor in Environmental Studies I have immersed myself in ways that individuals, corporations, and regions can become more sustainable and reduce their carbon footprint. In the past few years I have done field work pertaining to solar and wind energy along with researching new and upcoming techniques for diminishing the harmful effects humans have had on our planet. At the university of Minnesota, Duluth I have developed a love for the growth of renewable energy and throughout my senior year sought to answer the research question of the how viable renewable energy sources are in Northern Minnesota.Through taking courses in many different required fields at the University of Minnesota along with working jobs in several different fields throughout my high school and college career I have learned to communicate on several different levels. I have learned to work with small and large groups to accomplish specific tasks that allowed my communication skills to grow tremendously. Also, through an independent renewable energy study and being an intern at the University of Minnesota, Duluth’s Sustainable Agriculture Project I have learned how to rely on myself to get projects done in an organized and timely fashion. I believe both my group communication skills along with my ability to work alone on demanding tasks would greatly benefit any project given to me.
