I was responsible for the design of a new generation of modular solar array drive mechanism. This has reduced build and integration costs in order to support the next (now current) generation of telecommunication satellites, and a novel support structure to reduce thermal transmissions into the satellite structure. These satellites have larger power consumptions to be transferred through the rotary joint of the mechanism and greater solar array inertia to be driven than previous satellite buses. This device is now fully flight qualified and currently in orbit, since 2004, as MP (medium power – 9kW) versions, 2 per satellite, on Eutelsat W3A, InX, Amazonas, Inmarsat 4, Eutelsat Hotbird 8 and ten other satellites. No in orbit problems have been reported. The HP version (high power – 18kW) is currently undergoing qualification and flight certification. In 2014 the first of them will reach the end of their in-orbit design life.As shown on the BBC2 program "How To Build - A Satellite" 47.43 onwards, first broadcast on the 27th November 2011. -

Sep 1997 - Aug 1998Risley, CheshireA student placement at the European Space Tribology Laboratory (ESTL), a European Space Agency (ESA) funded department of AEA Technology PLC (no part of ESR Technology). Helping with fundamental research into friction in vacuum of spacecraft systems and testing of mechanisms for use in orbit or deep space.As part of my placement I presented a paper at the IMechE Tribology Group ‘The Mission of Tribology Research’ in December 1996 on the 'Development of a Facility for the Controlled Study of Misbehaviour in Spacecraft Ball Bearings'. This was after working on an ESA funded project 'Evaluation of Techniques for Characterisation of Ball Bearing Misbehaviour'. The purpose of this was ultimately to be able to detect and record in orbit mechanism behaviour, with the minimum signal to Earth, to predict failures before they happened and be able to prevent them by timely action. So condition monitoring with an algorithm to convert the signal to a minimum but still retaining the important pointers to failure.As my final university year project I designed a Rotary Transmission Vacuum Torque Sensor, in conjunction with ESTL, in order to overcome the variable parasitic losses of mechanical vacuum feed-throughs when using a torque sensors external to the vacuum chamber. As off 2011 it looks like no one else has ever designed such an item ESTL are interested in manufacturing one.
