Produced economic modelling and detailed insight reports on carbon markets policy, including offsets and renewable energy regulation, for both private sector and government clients. Also contributed to daily newsletter briefings.

I worked with the technology, media, and telecoms (TMT) and asset finance teams.Highlights included writing a client alert on AI regulation following publication of the UK government’s white paper, and presenting on the opportunities for satellite financing to the aviation team.I learnt how to amend and update commercial contracts and facility agreements, participated in client meetings, and received training in multiple practice areas (data protection, project finance, LIBOR transition, contract negotiations).

I participated in a summer vacation scheme with K&L Gates. First, I sat with the specialist Planning team, part of the Real Estate department. I researched the government’s prospective legislation requiring all new developments in the UK to increase biodiversity by 10%; my task was to communicate its consequences to a London council. Second, I sat with the Aviation team, within the Finance department. I reviewed lease arrangements for passenger aircraft, drafted contracts, and sat in on client meetings with a major commercial airline.Through practice and observation, I became familiar with the routine work of trainee solicitors, and the organisational framework of a commercial law firm. Integrating my own work into the close-knit group of lawyers (including trainees, associates, and partners) was fulfilling. I learnt how to network effectively with successful lawyers, who gave me the bigger picture of their work. Moreover, the discussions I had with lawyers specialised in technology, IP, and cryptocurrency, have inspired me to pursue a legal career involved with cutting-edge technology.

I shadowed Barnaby Jameson QC and Naomi Parsons during a terrorism case at Bristol Crown Court. The defendant was the co-leader of a Neo-Nazi extremist group. I assisted the Crown’s prosecution before and during the trial. My tasks included legal and factual research and analysis, attending meetings with counsel, and preparing questions for cross-examination. The accused was ultimately found guilty.I gained a better understanding of the court process. I witnessed the Crown’s skilled management of multiple contributing parties over three weeks.

I won the Horsman Grant to explore the pertinence of Alexis de Tocqueville’s sociological analysis of democracy to the 2020 US Presidential Election. At the height of COVID, very few journalists were present, and hardly any foreign correspondents.To comply with travel restrictions, I spent two weeks in Mexico before entering the USA. With civil society and campaigns largely affected, I instead arranged an independent and ambitious schedule. Covering the Midwest, East Coast, Southern states, and West Coast, I met with high profile journalists, advisors, academics, and campaigners. I attended rallies (including Donald Trump, Kamala Harris, BLM).Upon returning, I wrote two articles for publication.

I wrote an economic report titled ‘The Winners of Brexit’, analysing the medium term effects of legislative changes on the UK economy. I chose to focus on agri-tech and engineering sectors, due to existing trade patterns with Europe. I analysed three public stocks, Carr’s Group PLC (CARR), Cranswick PLC (CWK), and Genus PLC (GNS) and their respective benefits from regulatory and supply-chain changes resulting from Britain's withdrawal. I was challenged with anticipating the nature of Britain's departure, since the withdrawal agreement had yet been devised at the time of writing. I then had to communicate this macroeconomic position persuasively and succinctly in a report.I learnt how to undertake independent research and deliver it in a professional environment. I also experienced the impact of legislative changes on individual businesses. I have since managed a virtual portfolio of public stocks in the aerospace sector, with an average annual growth rate of 25%.

I spent the summer researching geopolitical risk, investment reviews, and note taking for phone calls and meetings. The company is focused on energy in the Middle East, 5G and telecoms in Eastern Europe, infrastructure and agriculture in Latin America, and shipping. I researched political risks facing oil and gas infrastructure in Kurdistan. I reviewed new investment and syndication opportunities in emerging economies, Brazil, and Greece.I understood the value of performing commercial due diligence on financial transactions. I became familiar with proof reading contracts and pre-contract agreements. I learnt how to operate within a fast moving and volatile commercial environment.

I was asked by the founder of InvestUK to help process an overflow of work due to new regulation following Brexit. I coordinated between private companies, The Home Office, and foreign investors seeking FDI opportunities in the UK to align investment strategies with UK bureaucracy. I did so by sitting in on meetings, and reviewing and editing business plans.
