Civic Texts is an online publication focused on emerging technologies, digital democracy and public policy.

Since its founding , e-PluribusUnum.org has become widely read as a top blog on civic technologies and open government, cited and respected around the world, from the Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives to the National Archives of the United Kingdom. Today, it is an original source for research, trusted analysis, and public interest advocacy focused at the intersection of emerging technology, open government, participatory media, and digital democracy.

We brought good ideas in digital democracy to light, documented who was working on them, and helped codify what’s working. We sought to achieve maximum positive public impact by educating the public, press, and lawmakers about how and where disruptive technologies strengthen societies instead of dividing them.

As the deputy director of the Sunlight Foundation, I started and led numerous initiatives, from civic engagement to strategic advocacy. I edited and published watchdog journalism that held the Trump White House accountable. I managed and grew Sunlight’s social media accounts, maintaining Twitter and Facebook through the presidential transition and through the first 16 months of the Trump presidency. I acted as expert source of analysis for media around the world. And I worked in coalitions on open government reform efforts in cities, states and nations around the world. While at Sunlight, I helped draft the Honest Ads Act, which would make online political ads transparent. The bill’s framework been adopted, adapted and enacted in states, endorsed by Facebook and Twitter, and used as a standard for transparency by those tech companies and Google.

Previous to taking a leadership role, I was a senior analyst at Sunlight, where I led the foundation’s federal and international transparency work, researching, writing and advocating for reforms around a broad portfolio of issues that included digital services, open government data, press freedom, net neutrality, social media, identity, surveillance, drones, mobile devices, and civic technology.

I used interactive media to explore the intersection of government, citizens and the Internet, sharing the voices, technologies and issues that matter in that space. I wrote about how technology is being used to help citizens, cities and national governments solve big problems. I gave keynote talks on those same subjects, served as an expert commentator on NPR and Al Jazeera, and moderated dozens of conference panels around the world.

I edited a site that focused on which regulations impact IT compliance, what IT infrastructure were affected, and the tools and strategies that IT professionals could use to manage those requirements. I wrote about cybersecurity, online privacy, data protection, financial security, healthcare IT, social media and telecom regulations.

As the associate editor of WhatIs.com, the online information technology encyclopedia, I wore a number of hats.I collaborated with a distributed editorial staff team writing, editing and updating definitions, quizzes, trivia questions, cheat sheets and learning guides.I researched, wrote and produced a popular podcast (35k+ downloads).I recorded and edited screencasts, including tutorials and software demonstrations. I blogged about the intersection of the Web and enterprise IT at "Our Latest Discovery" and the "Buzzword Alert."I produced and syndicated WhatIs.com's Word of the Day email newsletter. I composed three daily tech trivia questions bi-weekly. I explored new social media platforms for our content, including microblogging through Twitter and participation in a Facebook group.I shared my experience with interactive media production tools with my colleagues, including editing and technical support for podcasters and screencast editors.
