Profile bio

About Alexander C. Kaufman

I'm a writer and award-winning senior reporter at HuffPost, where I have spent much of the past decade covering what I consider the economic story of the century: decarbonization. After starting my career as a business reporter, I turned my attention to sustainability issues in 2015. As I wrote about corporate climate pledges, I began reading peer-reviewed papers and interviewing scientists to figure out the right context to give readers. It became immediately clear to me that this story was much bigger than companies' clean energy targets. My reporting tracked the Environmental Protection Agency's avalanche of Trump-era scandals and exposed the industry groups and operatives behind efforts to stymie climate policy. I have tried to explore the energy transition with nuance, challenging prevailing narratives on climate solutions and spotlighting the price working-class people in places like Mississippi and Puerto Rico pay for policies written in faraway capitals. I have also filed dispatches from around the world, from the Brazilian Amazon to Greenland’s ice sheet, China’s first atom-smashing lab to the Netherlands’ only nuclear reactor.A fourth-generation New Yorker raised on Long Island, I now live in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, with my wife, Amanda Luz Henning Santiago. Senior Reporter

Current

New York City

I'm a senior reporter on the national enterprise desk. I write about energy and climate policy at the local, national and international levels. My reporting has taken readers from the Arctic to the Amazon, Europe to East Asia. I have a particular interest in nuclear power, critical mineral supply chains, and energy security issues. I'm a regular guest on the BBC World Service show "Business Matters" and have provided expert commentary on NPR, CBC and podcasts with host ranging from energy industry groups to political activists. I have also appeared on MSNBC, Fox, Cheddar and other TV and streaming networks. I previously covered business, and served as senior editor overseeing business and economic coverage, authoring a weekly newsletter that I launched, and managing a team of reporters and writers.

Mar 2014 - Present

Reporter

New York City

I wrote about a wide variety of topics, ranging from international affairs to media to retail. Sometimes, I shot and anchored video packages for IBTimes TV.

May 2013 - Nov 2013

Editor

New York City

I contributed to the FishbowlNY site, delivering original scoops and analysis on the New York and national media. The site was owned by Mediabistro at the time, but has since been acquired by Adweek.

Apr 2013 - Jun 2013

Media Reporter

Los Angeles, Ca

I reported on the news media business, occasionally dabbling in film and TV industry news.

May 2012 - Mar 2013

Metro Correspondent

Boston, Ma

I covered breaking news, crime and fires in the Greater Boston area for the print edition of The Globe and Boston.com. I also wrote several enterprise stories on citywide spelling bees and Burmese New Year. Inspired by visits to the Globe's in-house printing press, I decided then to follow the somewhat old-fashioned tradition of including my middle initial in my byline.

Nov 2010 - May 2012

Editor-In-Chief

The Berkeley Beacon

Boston, Ma

The Berkeley Beacon is the independent, student-run newspaper for Emerson College in Boston. Under my tenure, we launched the country's first responsively-designed HTML5 website, just months after The Boston Globe did the same. Our efforts were written up on Neiman Lab.

Sep 2009 - May 2012

Community Manager

Boston, Ma

I figured out new ways of engaging audiences with local political issues and helped expand the user-base.

Jun 2011 - Aug 2011

Analyst

John Wilpers Media Consulting

Boston, Ma

I scoured the Internet for high-quality blogs to connect with print and online publications in order to increase their reach, relevance and revenue. Our clients included: Thomson Reuters, the Los Angeles Times, Miami Herald, GlobalPost and Christian Science Monitor. The consultancy has since grown into a full-time startup called Degrees2Dreams.

Jun 2010 - Aug 2010

Reporter

The Long-Islander

Huntington, Ny

At 15 years old, I started working at my local weekly newspaper, founded in 1838 by Walt Whitman. I reported local news, copyedited and took photos. I also wrote reviews of local theater productions and restaurant openings.
