About Alex Schultz, Ph.D.

I have a strong passion for innovation and innovative ideas. Whether I'm working to develop next generation desalination systems and devices for disadvantaged areas of the world, food quality sensing devices or point-of-use biotech devices, I'm always driven by my work. For the past 10+ years, I've worked or studied in various research and development settings that have allowed me to gain a broad knowledge base for device and system development. I have worked with or led every step of a concept's life cycle including proof-of-concept, device fabrication/microfabrication and electronic/firmware/software development for full device or system prototyping and handoff. This includes identifying key intellectual property components throughout the cycle. My primary interests include automation, robotics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, imaging systems, and advanced fluidic devices and systems with a focus on leading research and development efforts.

  • Okeanos Technologies Llc
    Research Scientist
Okeanos Technologies Llc Apr 2013 - Sep 2016
    Us
The primary focus was the development of the WaterChip which was a clean energy initiative for a low-power, ultra-portable desalination module for potable water where reverse-osmosis systems were not feasible. I was primarily tasked to prove the concept and develop the device and control system around it. COMSOL Multiphysics was utilized for the core device designs to determine the proper microfluidic flow characteristics which transitioned in the device microfabrication. Multiple fabrication techniques were explored including: laser machining/ablation, inductively coupled plasma processing, CNC machining/micromachining, thin film depositions, electrochemical processing.Beyond the device development, an automated fluid control system was developed. The overall electro-mechanical system included various valves, switches, actuators and relays for fluid routing as well as several sensors (pressure, conductivity, temperature, flow meters) for real-time data collection/monitoring, analysis, timing and algorithmic control and automation from the primary graphical user interface written in C/C++. Other key developments included electronics and firmware design and implementation for sensor interfacing.2014 Ocean Exchange Gulfstream Navigator Award2015 Gold Edison Award in Resource Management or Renewable Resources
