Director Of Data Science & Head Of Machine Learning EngineeringKoalafi Jul 2020 - Jan 2021Washington, Dc, UsI took on leading the entire data science team (India + US) as a part of a broader leadership role within Koalafi in mid-2020 managing a team of data scientists and analysts. Our team focused on tackling complex problems across the business from fraud and credit risk to compliance automation and growth and included significant effort to design models and policies for Koalafi's lease & loan products. This expanded role has enabled me to mentor associates in how to build and evaluate models, but to also instill solid practices for development and design of production level code. In this role, I expanded the data science team's reach across the organization and supported a data driven culture. The risk models & policies built under my tenure remained stable & in production for over 18 months.Other Responsibilities:- Managing & Writing year end reviews, including performance based compensation- Hiring & staffing both junior & senior associates within data science & analytics - Building & designing architecture for new product offerings - Managing production systems including outage monitoring, system stability, load testing, and all code owner responsibilities- Working closely with product + engineering to launch new features & leverage data science in production -
Senior Manager Of Data ScienceKoalafi Apr 2020 - Jul 2020Washington, Dc, UsAt the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, my prior work improving our decision engine showcased our extreme flexibility. This increased flexibility enabled my team to drive significant policy changes; however, the true benefit was the speed associated with these changes. Our work enabled us to adjust credit policy and to change our models in reaction to COVID within minutes and hours not days or weeks, increasing Koalafi's probability of survival. I also took on an expanded role leading the data science team, ensuring that associates were focused on company health and success. While in this role, my team was able to use automation to offset the loss of multiple associates across the organization due to COVID-19 and to improve the flexibility of our decision engine based off new dimensions including by incorporating new data sources independently. Furthermore, I acted as a core driver of growth across the data science team leading hiring of 3 new associates across my tenure. I taught these associates how to deploy changes to our kubernetes cluster, build unit and integration tests, utilize Git, and passed off resources for model design ensuring that new associates can drive impact to business from day one.Other responsibilities & accomplishments:Led hiring for associate to senior level rolesTaught associates how to use Python for automationEvaluated associates through the mid-year performance review process -
Senior Data ScientistKoalafi Aug 2019 - Apr 2020Washington, Dc, UsI was promoted to Senior Data Scientist in mid-2019 for my work redesigning Koalafi's rules engine into a true decision engine. In my time as Senior Data Scientist, I rebuilt our entire production decision engine using modern infrastructure to improve our ability to deploy models quickly and efficiently. At the start of this project, our decision engine was housed in a monolithic application, which limited our ability to deploy and change models. We ripped the monolith apart into a microservices driven framework housed on AWS. We utilized docker as our containerization platform in a kubernetes cluster, which had CI/CD pipelines built through GitLab. This drove our model deployment time down from weeks to hours and improved our flexibility greatly through the COVID-19 pandemic. I worked daily to improve and optimize our credit policy and approval rates through the use of multiple new consumer risk factors. While also in this role, I continued to improve our data pipelines, managed our risk monitoring protocols, and worked closely with other associates to use automation to improve their roles and responsibilities.Other responsibilities & accomplishments:Continued to push Koalafi's credit models to the edge through data set evaluationBuilt a custom horseracing suite for model design and evaluation Redesigned our feature engineering and reduction platform Rebuilt our risk monitoring suite to better reflect the health of the businessMentored junior associates to help them grow their career -
Data ScientistKoalafi Sep 2017 - Jul 2019Washington, Dc, UsI started at Koalafi (Formerly: West Creek Financial) as the sole data scientist in late 2017. When I joined Koalafi, I took on the task of redesigning our rules engine from the ground up incorporating machine learning (GBM) and other predictive modeling to minimize credit risk charge off. In early 2018, I rebuilt our data pipelines enabling Koalafi to build and analyze a model in under 12 hours, down from 6 months from our V1 and V2 model builds. My experience here showed me the benefits of streamlined automation that increased the flexibility of the Koalafi decision engine. While I was in this role, the V2 model helped drive 5M in EBITDA, reduced credit risk significantly, and helped Koalafi scale towards 4x revenue growth in 2018. Other responsibilities & accomplishments:Automated over 50 hours work of weekly work across the company reducing workload on multiple associatesBuilt and designed investor reporting Enabled analysis across the organization through improved data modelsCredit portfolio management and fraud minimizationCredit model evaluation and analysisProduct design and implementationMachine learning model deployment and design -
Self Employed ContractorSelf Employed Aug 2016 - Sep 2017In my senior year at the University of Richmond I began the path toward founding my own company. I worked as a self employed contractor for clients managing investments, building algorithms and databases, and working to develop a repertoire as both a quantitative financial analyst, an investment professional, and a developer. I found this work very rewarding as I was able to work with private investors, hedge funds, and investment professionals in the Richmond, Virginia area. My past clients include Merrill Lynch, Aspen Partners, Schoettle Holding LLC., and private high net worth individuals. In my work for these clients I have negotiated contracts, built and backtested algorithms, developed investment risk models, and worked closely with my clients answering their questions and solving problems on their behalf. This work lead me to found a LLC that I lead as CEO to manage all future contracts. Through this LLC I developed a financial algorithm that I spent two years creating. This algorithm creates a daily optimized portfolio that has a backtested annualized alpha greater than 5% with a max drawdown lower than the benchmark. I attempted to launch this as a CTA; however, failed to raise capital. As a part of these fundraising efforts, I met with potential investors Rob Finnegan and Boomer Muth, who brought me onto West Creek Financial to lead their data science efforts.

General Manger And Alternatives ManagerNxg Investors Feb 2015 - May 2017I managed the creation of an Exchange Traded Student Managed Investment Fund similar to the Equity Student Managed Investment Fund under Drs. Robert Dolan and Jerry Stevens. From January 2015 until May 2017 my team invested $25,000 in long only unlevered ETFs and worked to grow our assets under management. At my start, I managed our investments in commodities, foreign exchange, and other alternatives, then I was promoted to general manager and managed both our alternative and US investments. NXG's portfolio had a total annualized return of 14.23% with an annualized alpha of 8.16% ex fees over my tenure. NXG is a long only unlevered macro economic investment fund that utilized a top down approach to identify key strategic themes, which defined the investment thesis, asset allocation, and security selection processes. Each team member was assigned a key investment theme to shape the strategy. After which, I reviewed each theme, including my own, and utilized that information to drive our investment philosophies and present it to our advisors. Under the guidance of Drs. Dolan and Stevens we better understood how to analyze macroeconomic conditions and how those conditions impact financial markets both on national and global scales transforming that information into investments. NXG was a valuable part of my University of Richmond experience and greatly expanded my investments knowledge.

Research FellowUniversity Of Richmond May 2015 - Aug 2016University Of Richmond, Va, UsI utilized Bloomberg, Morningstar, Valueline, and Datastream to download and analyze steel prices from 1979 to 2015. Through the use of Excel I was able to discount those prices into real terms and import the data into MatLab where I used Fourier Analysis to understand cyclicality in steel prices. I authored on a paper titled: Cyclicality within Steel Prices from 1979 to Today. My time as a summer research fellow allowed me to better understand how to manipulate data and formulate opinions on that data. I was enable to undertake tasks that most undergraduates are not given the opportunity to complete. I was given complete unilateral voice and enabled to delve into the inner workings of advanced economics, mathematics, and finance. As a research fellow, I learned valuable quantitative skills that enabled my intellectual curiosity and allowed me to grow as an academic. These skills include, but are not limited to:- Real Price Data Analysis- Discounting- Valuations- Data Manipulation- Data Engineering. Through the use of MatLab and Excel I was able to author a paper: Cyclicality within Steel Prices from 1979 to Today. This paper examined price movements in steel prices and seeks to determine that steel prices are cyclical. I am removed non-steel related price fluctuations in an effort to understand movements of steel prices and to predict the underlying cycle. -
