As Director of Engineering, I work with Product, Customer Success, Content, and Business Development teams to design, plan, and deliver features that provide value to users and the company. I focus on removing barriers to engineering development by ensuring work is well-defined and properly prioritized, and nurture a culture of collaborative development through pairing and code review. I also hired, onboarded, and oversee a team of 4 full-time engineers and up to 10 contractors.

Responsible for all technical matters related to the Prolegis product, including:- Delivery of a suite of features for the House of Representatives, the Democratic Whip, and legislative staff, on time and under budget, for contracts worth millions of dollars. - Overseeing our infrastructure transition from Heroku to AWS using Terraform and Kubernetes- Creating Prolegis’ cyber policy, incident response plan, and organizational security practices- Developing business reporting systems to track product engagement, user growth, and advertising impact

As Chief Engineer of MITRE's Health Policy department and leader of MITRE's Policy Platform, I worked with 50+ lawyers and policy analysts to:- Grow and scale legal analysis workflows using technology, product development, and marketing- Connect legal technology solutions to US Government agency customers- Promote legal innovators by hosting forums and events promoting innovation in legal analysis

As a Lead Artificial Intelligence Engineer, I led and managed projects research projects to:- Reduce case backlogs in US Courts using citation network analysis- Augment Policy Surveillance/Legal Epidemiology for CDC- Scale government agency policy document analysis with document structure extraction, citation network analysis, and web application development

As a Senior Computer Scientist, I led and supported research projects developing solutions for:- Extracting metadata from court filings using machine learning, published at the 'Automated Semantic Analysis of Information in Legal Text' workshop at the International Conference on AI & Law (ICAIL)- Extracting obligations from Executive Orders using Natural Language Processing, published at the 'AI & the Administrative State' workshop at ICAIL- Improving case data extraction for US Courts with machine learning using Kubernetes & Apache Kafka- Identifying policy updates based on legislative changes, funded by a US Treasury agency

As a staff computer science researcher at MITRE, I led and supported multiple research projects supporting US Government agencies, including designing, developing, and marketing: - A Citation Network Database of Legal Documents for Defense, Financial, and Healthcare agency legal research challenges. - A data analysis and visualization platform which supported senior management reporting and enhanced collaboration between researchers in MITRE's $70M/yr research program. - A generalized black-box-testing framework for identifying new innovations in product design, leveraging Genetic Algorithm search. Additionally, I also authored and patented research on:- Using citation networks to explore the scale and interconnectivity of the US Code- Applying citation networks to identify legislative impacts on Federal Agencies

As an intern at MITRE during my senior year of college, I worked with researchers to prototype applications of Complex Systems theory to government challenges, including:- Building a policy simulation engine in JavaScript using the Active Nonlinear Testing framework on the World3 Systems Dynamics model. - Implementing a statistical distribution classifier in R for identifying 'Power Laws' in datasets using Clauset and Shalizi's 'Power Laws in Empirical Distributions' approach.

At MIO, a DC Congressional startup, I worked with senior Congressional staff to develop an app to improve Congressional Office vote management by:- Led a team of developers to build the app from wireframes to deployment - Utilized AngularJS, NodeJS, and Websockets to create a real-time commenting and voting system- Built a system to retrieve, extract, and structure vote information from unstructured sources

As a summer undergraduate research fellow at the Santa Fe Institute, I worked with Luis Bettencourt and Geoffrey West to identify synergistic industrial development patterns that lead to increased economic performance. Used R and Principal Components Analysis on Census Industry location data.

Built a web application to tabulate inflows and outflows of library materials for each department at the UCSB Davidson library. Used Ruby on Rails framework. Also maintained library inventory of PCs and other hardware for use in the library.

From Fall 2010 to Spring 2011, I interned with a technology-focused venture capital firm. I assisted in organizing the fund's portfolio, developing in-house investment valuation tools, and analyzing individual companies and markets for strategic purposes. Other activities included integrating legal terms of investments into analysis, reviewing current literature and investment guides, and conducting due diligence on potential investments.

In the summer of 2009 I interned in the antitrust department of economic consulting firm specializing in services to the legal industry. I performed antitrust research into a range of industries to determine the makeup of various markets, including gross revenue, market share by company, and levels of control. I performed quantitative data analysis using statistical modeling software called STATA on a range of data sources derived from legal discovery. I also wrote and developed presentations to potential major clients in the computer, chemical, and health care industries.

Worked on ongoing (as of 2009) consulting assignment for a U.S. Department of Transportation multi-year research program (www.metris.us) managed by U.C. Santa Barbara. The project assesses data from GPS tracking systems on cargo trucks serving Ports of Los Angeles/Long Beach, the largest U.S. port complex. Project responsibilities included presentation of the system to top executives with major trucking companies, and programming of tracking devices to be used in the project.

Managed office and marketing data for U.S. office of German hardwoods flooring manufacturer (TEKA) and Danish woods coatings (WOCA Oils). U.S. company is “Reclaimed Woods of the World”.Responsible for sales support, marketing data management, assistance with currency conversions for international purchases, and general office support.
