  • Tribal Networks
    Project Coordinator
    Tribal Networks Feb 2009 - Jun 2010
Throughout 2009 I worked remotely, as project coordinator, with an international team comprised of the NGO Tribal Networks, the Permaculture Research Institute of Australia and Moroccan community activists, organising the first permaculture design course (PDC) in Morocco. In 2010, against the backdrop of travel chaos caused by the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull, I coordinated and co-taught the two week PDC in collaboration with Moroccan partners and Berber tribal stakeholders, raising 1000 euros towards a bore hole for the partner community and subsidising the attendance for local participants. As Project Coordinator for Tribal Networks I travelled with a community activist around Morocco to evaluate the impacts of the PDC, to visit and assess the state of community projects and networks. I was to produce a report investigating the needs and requirements of Moroccan stakeholders and an analysis of this information in relation to the services provided by the NGO. I found that there were strong, organised networks of community activism and cooperative production in Morocco and concluded that rather than developing new projects independent of these networks, a more appropriate direction for Tribal Networks would be to lend expertise and resources to help empower actors within these networks to manifest change on their own terms. In response to my findings, Tribal Networks evolved into Direct Sponsor, rejecting an aid narrative by connecting the agency of people in the majority world directly to sponsorship. I shared my experiences and research in a series of articles on the Permaculture Research Institute website, accessible via this link: https://permaculturenews.org/2010/07/21/morocco-observations-past-present-and-future-part-i/
