Mechanical Engineering - R&DMedtronic Sep 2020 - May 2022Minneapolis, Mn, UsR&D on a cross-functional tiger team created to rapidly develop a new medical device. The device was a patient worn procedural aerosol source control barrier.Responsible for the CAD, manufacturing drawings, prototyping, test plan, test methodologies (including literature review, procedures, and test fixtures), and collaborating with suppliers to facilitate production ramp.- Designed multiple rapid prototype LSR molds, machined in-house and used to mold prototypes.- Characterized and grouped large sets of anthropometric data to drive the products size distributions. Mapped these sizes onto the CAD models.- Used cadaver labs to receive direct surgeon feedback on prototype concepts. - Received 2021 ENT Innovation Award for the expedited development of a medical device. - Patent filed for a unique and novel mechanism to control fluid flow. The design uses a single stepper motor to independently control three connected to a cam. Developed prototype proof of concept to demonstrate functionality. -
Mechanical Engineering - R&DMedtronic May 2020 - Sep 2020Minneapolis, Mn, UsAn essential member of a tiger team (a small, specialized team to expedite development) aimed at the rapid development of a medical device.Responsible for the CAD, manufacturing drawings, prototyping, testing methods (development and execution), writing of protocols/reports, characterization, etc. - Designed multiple rapid prototype LSR molds, machined in-house and used to mold prototypes.- Characterized and grouped large sets of anthropometric data to drive the products size distributions. Mapped these sizes onto the CAD models.- Hosted cadaver labs to receive direct surgeon feedback on prototype concepts.Received 2021 ENT Innovation Award.Filed for a patent based on a novel idea I formulated during a brainstorming session for an unrelated project. Developed prototype proof of concept to demonstrate functionality. -
R&D Mechanical Engineering Co-OpMedtronic Sep 2019 - Dec 2019Minneapolis, Mn, UsIndividual projects are outlined below:(1) AUTOMATED MICRODEBRIDER TEST FIXTURE - Developed a test fixture capable of consistently replicating the normal use of a microdebrider on bone. - The fixture allows for the automation of various tests to save time, create a consistent and fully repeatable cycle, and provide new data through the characterization of newly controllable variables (previously undefinable from human variation). - MECHANICAL aspects encompassed the modification of a 3-axis CNC machine, components include NEMA 23 stepper motors driving lead screws guided by linear rails. - ELECTRICAL includes a large power supply for high-power stepper drivers which are soldered on a breadboard and wired in configuration with switches, sensors, and a CNC breakout board for USB 232 communication. - SOFTWARE and a GUI was created by modifying an open-source CNC milling software to align with the components of the fixture. Programming for "test runs" consisted of writing G- Code files with variable input integration. Dynamic data acquisition includes torque and temperature, and the GUI allows for live control of the speed, depth, location references, etc. during a test run.(2) INSPECTION SYSTEM OF CLEAR EMG TUBES: - Designed, built, and tested an inspection system for improved attribute detection and efficiency for inspecting various sizes of EMG tubes. - Includes a novel 3D printed LED-backlit cradle which minimizes reflection during the inspection. - Fixture consists of a digital microscope, a 22" monitor, and a MIC6 base plate with a slot for the LED-backlit cradle to slide side to side. (3) CABLE TESTING - Developed test methods, protocols, and reports for torture testing cable samples to aid in the downs-selection of suppliers. - One notable test includes flex testing to over 200,000 cycles with dynamic data acquisition of each wire's resistance - where each cable contains 15+ wires. -
Engineering ContingentMedtronic May 2019 - Sep 2019Minneapolis, Mn, UsDeveloped experiments and executed testing to test, troubleshoot, and resolve any and all issues in a next-generation nerve monitoring surgical system. The assignment was granted the highest priority to expedite the process and 60 hour work weeks were maintained for approx. 4 months. This testing was done across the following competencies: 1. Software 2. Firmware 3. Electrical 4. MechanicalCONTRIBUTIONS: - Responsible for execution of all firmware protocols in both formal verification and validation. - Developed the system's audio characterization based on the mechanical & SW system requirements. DOE led to practical & realistic testing conditions, which allowed it to be used as the protocol for official verification. - Conducted ad-hoc testing outside the scope of standard protocols to identify unknown issues/bugs. This led to creating a total of ~ 300 SPRs (software problem reports) in Azure DevOps. - Resolution to SPRs was completed in parallel with the applicable engineer(s). Communication typically involved tracking down the responsible software engineer/developer. Some led to identifying manufacturing flaws, electrical oversights, integration, etc. - Conducted testing and identified artifacts in pulse width modulation through oscilloscope analysis. - Responsible for maintaining a fleet of ~ 15 test consoles including repairs, daily software/firmware updates, etc.
