Alex's journey with ETZ began when he was onboarded to re-architect and deliver a struggling project, "Project Caspian," which had been struggling for 2 years.Upon joining ETZ, Project Caspian was in its developmental phase, presenting a set of challenges and opportunities. Alex took charge and initiated a transformation of the project's architecture. The existing infrastructure was insufficient for the project's goals. His strategy involved removing the Azure Data Factory and implementing an Azure Synapse environment with dedicated SQL pools. He rebuilt data pipelines within Synapse to move data between existing Azure SQL databases and the new dedicated SQL pools, using Polybase for efficient loading. Data in ADLS V2 was stored in Parquet format, streamlining data management and boosting performance.In addition to the architectural overhaul, Alex crafted Power BI data models, templates, and reports, supporting the initial release of Project Caspian. He also recruited and mentored new data engineers and Power BI developers. Under his leadership, Caspian Phase 1 launched successfully within 8 months, featuring eight reports, one dashboard, and four demo reports for customers.Alex's impact extended beyond Project Caspian. He led the expansion into a Data Lake as a Service, targeting enterprise customers. This involved designing and building data lake and data warehouse solutions on Azure Synapse, integrating data from various sources into a structured format for customer use.Alex's success with Project Caspian led to his promotion to Director. In this role, he managed the company's cashflow forecast, rebuilt the IT team at 70% of the previous resource cost, and assisted the finance function with a new accounting firm. He also automated numerous in-house processes, driving efficiency and innovation throughout the organization.Alex's journey at ETZ exemplifies a dedication to innovation, process optimization, and leadership.

Alex’s main focus has been working on a large project for one of the leading UK freight operators. Responsible for building Power BI reports on top of a range of data sources, coving numerous use cases and complexities. This providing the opportunity to demonstrate his experience in problem-solving, his in-depth knowledge of the DAX language and his ability to produce both functional and aesthetically pleasing Power BI reports. Throughout the project Alex has worked closely with the business to determine their true business goals and to translate these into technical requirements. Through the delivery of a suite of quality, easy to use reports, Alex is enabling users to make smarter, more informed business decisions and driving the business into a data driven culture.

Undertaking roles from analysing migration data to assisting in Azure and Office 365 migration projects across the company. Having demonstrated his capability in this area he trained and moved into his new role as a BI Developer.Throughout Alex completing his MCSA and qualifying in BI development he has learned skills in Python through DataCamp. Learning to work with and manipulate large datasets using packages such as Matplotlib, Scikit-Learn and Seaborn to generate complex graphs and linear regression models also learning to use Microsoft Machine Learning Studio.Alex has demonstrated his problem-solving skills in building and designing Azure SQL Data Warehouses involving designing and implementing fact tables, dimension tables, indexes, schema requirements and designing partition structures to support a data warehouse that enables accelerated querying and loading of data.Alex’s understanding of SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) has enabled him to deliver Extract, Transform and Load solutions (ETL). Working with multiple source systems to transform data as it enters the data warehouse from the source and configuring bulk loading, error flow re-direction and de duplication. Executing merge joins and inner joins from multiple file connections.Using SSAS Alex can develop SQL Data Models, designing Multidimensional and Tabular Models for use in a reporting environment and Creating dashboards within Power BI. Using a broad knowledge of the industry to make confident configuration decisions.
