About Alexander Porter

Alexander's work ranges from documentary films to immersive experiences (VR), and location-based or interactive installations. He loves creating complex community-driven projects with a documentary essence and immersive presentation. He delights in working with teams and communities to build profound experiences that surprise and evolve. He frequently adapts experimental photographic techniques to these purposes; computer vision, three-dimensional scanning, volumetric capture, and video game technologies. His projects have visualized broad or invisible concepts from video game addiction, the beauty and tensions of modern urban living, the inner workings of cyber warfare, or with Topography the ephemeral complexity of ecology. He currently creates transmedia documentary projects and films with his partner, Hannah Jayanti. The most recent is the feature film Truth or Consequences (Rotterdam, 2020), a ‘speculative documentary’ film about the world’s first spaceport focusing on the town nearby. The project comprises a feature film, a local film festival, and a bespoke virtual cinematography tool, designed to virtually film 3D reconstructions culled from video footage and brought to life in virtual reality.Awards include an Emmy award in Outstanding New Approaches: Documentary, two Webby awards among various festival awards for individual productions. Recent credits include Strata (ongoing), The Changing Same (Sundance, 2021), a magical-realist VR experience, Blackout (Tribeca Storyscapes, 2017), Styles & Customs VR installation with DIS Magazine (Carnegie Museum of Art, 2017). Other credits include Love Child (Sundance, 2014), and CLOUDS (Sundance, 2014).Alexander is former co-founder at Scatter, an award-winning immersive entertainment and creative software company. Scatter was recognized for pioneering the emerging language of Volumetric Filmmaking through its original volumetric film productions and its AR/VR creativity tools. Scatter’s mission was to expand the boundaries of human expression, with a mission to define the emerging language of volumetric filmmaking. Scatter is proud to direct and curate quintessential volumetric films and to be the leader in democratizing the means for their creation.Scatter's first product Depthkit is the most widely used toolkit for volumetric video capture. Depthkit enables any video creator to easily capture live-action performances as true to life three-dimensional performances, fusing the craft of filmmaking with the interactivity of video game design.

Course: Computational Portraiture, NYU ITPTen percent of all photographs ever taken were created in just the last year. How has the ubiquity of cameras changed our culture's relationship to images and altered photography as an artistic medium? By combining digital imaging, new sensing technology, algorithms, and metadata like geolocation, scientists and artists are discovering ways to synthesize new forms of vision out of vast data sets. Have these processes revealed new ways of seeing? What possibilities await in the near future?During this 2-point course survey recent artworks made with techniques such as photogrammetry, 3D scanning, and computer vision, and research the tools used to create them.
