About Alexander R. French

My core interests lie in applying protein engineering toward breaking down barriers to neuropharmacological research and development. My skill set spans the full length-scale of organismal biology from single molecule imaging to in vivo mouse behavior. Within this range I have experience in whole-cell patch clamp slice electrophysiology; mouse electroencephalography (EEG); transgenic mouse husbandry; mouse behavioral models including in vivo ethanol consumption, locomotor, and rotarod assays; extensive microscopy experience including confocal fluorescence, bioluminescence, single molecule fluorescence, and differential interference contrast (DIC); protein engineering including optogenetic, biosensor, and split enzyme complementation assay development; protein expression and purification in E. coli and SF9 cells; spectroscopy including UV/Vis and circular dichroism; assay development in the areas of animal behavior, cellular signaling and molecular function; molecular biology including gibson and quikchange cloning, DNA ligations, expression, and purification. These broad experiences make me well-suited for dynamic environments where biochemists, pharmacologists, and neuroscientists are working together. Regarding leadership, I have 10+ years of mentoring younger scientists, who have gone on to academia, medical school, and industry. I ascribe to the methods of Cohen & Cohen ("Lab Dynamics", Third Edition, 2018) wherein, within the constraints of the position, I do my best to customize and connect the work to the mentee's own motivations and career goals. I also follow their use of de-escalatory language as part of my approach pro-actively prevent and manage conflict, and use their 2:1 rule for positive feedback.

My lab studies how alcohol and psychedelics alter the brain in order to understand addiction and how psychedelics might be repurposed into effective treatments for alcohol misuse. We use a host of exciting techniques on a wide scale ranging from molecular to whole-animal behavior. Check us out! https://www.frenchlab.org/As an instructor, I teach Pharmacology II and co-teach Clinical Toxicology.
  • School Of Molecular And Cellular Biology - University Of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
    Postdoctoral Researcher
School Of Molecular And Cellular Biology - University Of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Jan 2022 - Aug 2024
    Champaign, Illinois, United States
Objective 1: Use electrophysiology to quantify how brain-derived estrogen affects hippocampal excitability. Outcome 1: Have learned whole cell patch clamp techniques and begun collecting data in Alzheimer’s mouse model. Objective 2: Use EEG to measure cell-type specific contributions of brain estrogen to epileptogenesis. Outcome 2: Confirmed conditional knockout in TdTomato reporter mice and have nearly completed breeding program for experimental lines. Completed training on EEG and stereotactic methods to be used.
  • Purdue University, Department Of Medicinal Chemistry And Molecular Pharmacology
Postdoctoral Researcher, Richard Van Rijn Lab
Purdue University, Department Of Medicinal Chemistry And Molecular Pharmacology Mar 2021 - Dec 2021
Objective 1: Develop a novel GPCR drug screening assay for simultaneous readout of arrestin2 and arrestin3 signaling. Outcome 1: High-throughput assay reports two arrestin pathways at a GPCR in real time with 400% signal change. Objective 2: Assess the effects of biased kappa opioid receptor agonists on alcohol consumption in mice. Outcome 2: Found evidence upending previously held theory that arrestin3 signaling promotes sedation and pro-alcohol consumption behaviors at the kappa opioid receptor in a voluntary ethanol consumption model in mice.
